HP OfficeJet 6950
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Yesterday I bought the (brand-new)  HP OfficeJet 6950 e-All-in-One Printer (Product Number: P4C78A).

I have installed the drivers and accompanying software etc. etc.

The scanning and printing work perfectly wirelessly (vie Network Printing), except the faxing. When I try to use the fax printer from Acrobat/Work etc., I get the following error "The fax function was disabled when this printer was set up. [...]" and then suggests that I "contact my network administrator" (which is I).

I have tried installing again the drivers, using alternative drivers (previous versions, Microsoft Generic Drivers etc. etc.), but nothing worked. I have also tried changing the Print Processor and Print Port settings from "Printer Properties". And lastly, I have tried changing the settings of my printer from the Embedded Web Server. In the EWV there is no Admin setting to disable explicitly the network faxing, so I tried removing my Admin passeord to see if the faxing was "unlocked". Even without an Admin password, the faxing was still "locked".

Thanks in advance, I would really appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

About the Control Panel Lock, yes you are correct! It should only apply to the items on the menu and not affect the actual functions of the machine; Thats why I called it a bug.

Hello, @margirou1 – Hope you are well 🙂

Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

Going through your post, I understand that you are unable to send a fax from the PC. To help you fix the issue, I need to know whether you can send a fax from the fax machine. Run a fax test on the printer and check:

  1. From the home screen on the printer control panel, touch Fax, swipe up, and then touch Setup.

  2. Touch Tools.

  3. Touch Test Fax.

The printer displays the status of the test and then prints a report.

  4. Wait while the printer prints the Fax Test Report.

  5. Review the report.

    • If the report indicates the printer passed the test and you still have problems faxing, check the fax settings listed in the report to make sure the settings are correct. A blank or incorrect fax setting can cause problems with faxing.

    • If the report indicates the printer failed the test, review the report for more information about fixing the problem.

If the test passes, then uninstall and then reinstall the printer software as suggested below:

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://hp.care/2ra6tvx to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Now, open a document and then try to print to the fax entry and check.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

Hi,

Thanks for responsing! The test you've mentioned, I have done it 2 times since the time I set-up the printer. Each and every of the enrtries says "PASSED". I can send faxes from the machine itself.

As for the uninstallation of the driver, it didn't fixe the problem either.

Hello, @margirou1

Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers.

Do you have a fax entry for the Officejet printer? Let me know.

If you have the fax entry, open a word document and try to print to the fax entry and let me know what happens.

Thanks, I'll watch for your reply!

Of course I have a fax entry! It was installed with the drivers.

In my first post, when I asked about the problem intitially, I mentioned that when I tried to use the Fax Printer (from the Devices and Printers), I get the message i wrote before ("Fax function locked etc. etc.")

Hello, @margirou1

You can try to use the universal fax drivers. Check the steps below:

  1. Download and extract the following:
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL60874/ds-146586-1/HPUFDDriver.zip
(Use any software as Winzip or right click the file and select Extract All).
  2. Open the extracted folder and run setup.exe
  3. Follow the steps on screen, an HP Universal Fax Driver printer will be created on your PC.
  4. Print to the HP Universal Fax Driver, select your printer and check the box to add a queue for your printer.

If the above software is not working, then try to download the drivers from here: HP printer setup (Windows built-in driver)

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

Hello,

Thank you very much for trying to help. I have resolved the problem a couple hours ago.

So, the problem is because of a bug in the Embedded Web Server. Particularly, I turn on the Administrator Setting "Lock Control Panel" (which means that the printer's setting cannot be changed from the screen of the printer but only through the EWS).

Because the Control Panel is locked, for some weird reason no faxing can occur through the computer, but only through the machine.

I have also contacted HP Support in my country, and they had absolutely no clue that the printer can fax through the computer ("Sir, your printer cannot fax through the computer" [sic]).

Anyway, I hope somebody will take note of the bug and fix in in the next update.

Sincerely,

Hello, @margirou1

Thanks for the update & Great stuff! Glad to know that you were able to fix the issue 🙂

I was aware of the control panel lock feature in the printer EWS, but I thought it was only applicable to the features on the printer control panel (Sigh 😞 ) Anyways, thanks for the update and it will certainly help me while working with other customers.

Visit us again if you have any concerns!

Thank you again and may you also have a great day and even better tomorrow 🙂
