REPLACED Scanner is exact same as this NEW one, but doing the same EXACT thing - not scanning when print cartridges have been removed! I put the cartridges in a zip lock bag so they don't dry out. But what is wrong? I just tried again and this time it said "Scanner not found." This is the first time that happened. And the steps leading up to scanning were different - seemed to lead me down a different path. What is going on? Also, I was asked to log in this time. Even that was confusing!. It said to log into my account. Well, the account I made was in a window titled HPID. This time it just said to log into my account. I assumed it was the same account as set up within the HPID window, but not sure. To be sure about things, shouldn't the log in page look consistent? Why would it not make clear by having the log in under the same HPID window?  The reason little things like this are important is that when protocol is not strictly followed, it gives the company (HP in this case) opportunities to deceive and damage others while profiting from confusion.  I can tell you that I have probably had to give up on hundreds of issues over the past 8 years.  I have lost a lot of work, and spent a lot longer on things just because of the confusion issues. I do not think HP does not understand this.  It is common sense - isn't it?

Another thing:  I am getting dead ended.  So I keep trying to start the chat over. It says to log in and then there is not log in page - no window.  So I choose "Start Over."  Each of the last 3 or 4 times I've put in my Serial Number and then it asks me to log in and no log in window comes up.  I'm left dead ended.

I think it used to give me a choice to chat with tech.support. Now I don't think it gives me the opportunity to go to the community from its support page.

All I want to know is how to make is scan when I remove the printer cartridges. I don't need the printer.  I've done most of my printing at the school library.  I just need the scanner.

UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!!!!!!

I put the nearly full ink cartridges back in.  Carefully took them out of the zip lock bag, took off the protective tape and reinstalled them.  Then I tried scanning and it scanned!  Because it didn't work earlier, I did not expect that.

But, well, I was told the scanner would work even after the ink cartridges run out of ink. I was not told it would not work if the cartridges were removed.  So I took out the full black ink cartridge and put in the empty black cartridge from the replaced printer (which I've not sent back yet) into the new replacement. It scanned!  It scanned with the full color cartridge, and the empty black cartridge. Now I am going to try the color cartridge from the printer being returned and the empty black cartridge.  So now I am using the two old cartridges from the printer that stopped scanning. I am using the two old cartridges in the new printer and.....  it scanned!  The scanner worked!  I did not expect this either - thought maybe one or the other was damaged in some strange way that would impact scanning.

Well, I've done this much - might as well continue by trying the old color cartridge with the new black.  I did and not surprisingly that worked.

Well actually, now I have to try again with no cartridges.  Maybe all the replacing triggered something. And I did and WOW!!!!  UNBELIEVABLE !!!!! It scanned.  WHAT  I GOING ON ????????   Actually I am still confused about this.  It seems so INCONSISTENT !!!!!!!!

I was actually going to send all the ink cartridges back to HP with the replaced printer.  I don't like keeping ink around here.

Now I wonder.  I don't know what I should do. If it is inconsistent, I guess I better keep all the cartridges.  I definitely do not want to buy more. I will keep them in zip lock bags with the tape back on the contacts.  But I seriously hope I don't have to keep opening that bag, keep carefully taking the tape off each time, keep installing, using, removing, putting tape back on, putting in the zip lock bag..... over and over and over.  I have things to do. I am not a business.  I am not hiring anyone to do this. I feel like I am losing so much time! (Actually this is just one of it seems like millions of little time wasters.  WHY AREN'T THINGS CLEAR AND NOT BURIED IN A LOT OF READING).

Welcome to the HP User Community.

There might simply be a misunderstanding about the device function.

This device is not a true scanner  - this device is a printer than includes a scan feature.

Removing the ink cartridges and then switching off the printer can damage the ink system.

Removing the ink cartridges - because the printer depends on these - can cause printer malfunction.

It does not matter that you want to "scan" - the printer requires a certain setup that includes working ink cartridges.

The ink cartridges should be left in the printer.

Excerpted:

CAUTION: HP recommends that you replace any missing cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality
issues and possible extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. Never turn
off the printer when cartridges
are missing.
