The scanner on my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 has begin scanning with coloured lines which look like a rainbow bar code. I have attempted several fixes to this with no success. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

@juliancarnrite, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
This looks like a hardware issue with the scanner mechanism in the printer.
Make sure you have tried the steps mentioned in this document - Resolving Copy Problems
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your PC.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Try making a copy to check the result.
Check the scanner bar functionality if the issue persists.
Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.
- Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
- Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.
If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi, thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately none of the solutions you provided have solved the issue. I agree that it seems like a hardware issue which means updating firmware or unplugging the printer will work. I have observed the scanning bar as it moves below the glass and it does not appear jammed or broken.
I'm pretty frustrated and it seems a lot of people have had a similar problem. The printer is no longer under warranty but it isn't very old and i'm really unhappy that the scanner has stopped working as it is half of what i use the printer for.
Any additional help you can provide is much appreciated.

I understand. However, there is no other step to be performed and this is not a common issue.
If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
