HP ENVY Photo 7855
macOS 10.12 Sierra

Summary:

I'm still using the same computer and printer connected via wifi but after ~year+ of success randomly stopped scanning through both settings>printer>scanner, printer's scan to computer and via Easy Scan app noticed about the same time. My mac has been too old for new Apple updates so no changes there. It's still compatible with latest Easy Scan and an older version of HP Smart. I know the scanner and wifi works as I can scan to make copies within the printer and scan to computer via wifi and HP Smart (but HP smart isn't feasible for my needs, below)

I've tried:

Resetting/restoring/unplugging the printer, uninstall/reinstalling apps, HP print and scan Dr (loops me to install same programs again), everything I found online and was instructed to try during a 1.5 hours on the phone with HP.. their 'conclusion' at the end.

My avenues for scanning and their results:

-From Easy Scan: "Scanner reported an error An error occurred while communicating with the scanner." NEW issue*

-From Settings>Printer>Scan: "An error occurred while communicating with the scanner (-9923)" NEW issue*

-From printer's scan to computer: After previously following prompt to set up Easy Scan and later HP Smart and scanning to computer,  it is now reshowing me to again visit 123.hp etc on loop. NEW issue*

-HP Smart: WILL scan but doesn't do double sided scanning so I have to scan and flip one page at a time individually. This isn't sustainable as I scan 10-30+ page double sided documents for record keeping which is why I've used Easy Scan. Also, the most updated version isn't compatible with my computer while Easy Scan's is.

HP's 'conclusion':

After 1.5 hours of troubleshooting with no real explanation HP's blaming it on Apple's long time privacy settings.. and then that my printer doesn't have it's own 2 sided scan option (which has always been the case, hence using Easy Scan!) They couldn't explain how those could be true given that everything was working with both those factors before, and that my mac downloaded/opened and connected with the apps sans privacy related blockers or notifications.

Hi @plantleaf,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to scan from HP Easy Scan or Image Capture.

 Follow the below steps-

Try updating mac and printer firmware

To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac

If the issue persists, you would have to wake the printer manually to scan.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I addressed these both in the original post and they did not work. Looks like I need to start shopping for a non-HP printer.

I respect your decision.

Please try the below steps -

Set a manual IP-

To set a manual IP and try the steps below -

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP

--->then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply

--->go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply

--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.

--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min
