OfficeJet Pro 8600 plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I updated to Windows 10 and the old HP interface, which I was very happy with, disappeared and was replaced by HP Scan and Capture which does not have an OCR option.  Working through web information i have tried to reload the ProIris OCR component from my original disk but that does not recognise Windows 10 and refuses to work, the download at http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=cs_120468_3&swEnvOid=4062 also refuses to work saying it cannot recognised an installed printer - despite it being there and connected by ethernet cable.  Anyone any idea what I can try ?

Many thanks

Hi,

have you tried reinsalling the HP Software?

The full feature software do include IRIS OCR for Windows 10 too.

Right click the Start icon and select Programs and Features.

search for HP and remove both HP Officejet Pro 8600 Basic Device Software and IRIS OCR (if installed).

Fro the Control Panel select Devices and Printers, remove any remaining 8600 printer by right clicking and selecting Remove Device.

Next reinstall the latest software below:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL40120/bi-108858-4/OJ8600_1315-1.exe

You should now be able to save as edutable text via HP Scan or HP Scan Extended

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Not sure if ReadIRIS supports Win 10.

However, we can sugeest trying this alternative Scan software (defintely better than HP Scan and Capture)

HP Scan Extended

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Let us know if that works.

Thanks for your swift answer and the new scan software is more extensive than the simplistic screen and capture, although it only appears to recognise the printer/scanner if it is plugged in via the USB and not when on the network which is where I use it normally.  However, what I was really hoping for was a return to the 'save as editable text' option which was on the previous interface and I assumed ReadIris - which does not seem to like Windows 10 - was the sotware facilitating the OCR element.

Unofrutnately, helpful that you have been it does not solve my problem; but many thyanks for the effort.

Very many thanks indeed.  This approach simply reinstalled the previous interface and all the added bonuses including the OCR capability which I have just restested and works very well indeed.  Why did HP change soemthing for the worse rather than leaving well alone, who knows.

As a small aside i could not find the installed software and coule not delete it but this installed well as i think i did not have the basic package which this one appears to be as it was wiped out by the Windows 10 update.

Again many thanks indeed.

My Struggle is over.   I have a Laserjet M1217 combination printer, scanner and fax which was working fine on my PC running Windows 8.   I upgraded my PC and now have Windows 10. When I tried to print it was suggested that I download the latest drivers for my printer, which I did.   I could then print but not scan.  Readiris could not find the scanner.   After almost buying a new printer/scanner, I read the above post.  I connected the printer via USB cable to the PC and I was asked if I wanted to download the drivers, and I said yes.  I noticed that an older driver was being downloaded and when it prompted me with the option to rather use a "better" driver which is already installed, I said no.   I unplugged the USB cable and tried to scan from Readiris 12, and it worked, including OCR.

So HP, please take note, your currently recommended drivers for the above setup is the "poorer" option and does not successfully talk to Windows 10.   The old drivers do.
