We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw (499Q8A/499Q8F series) connected by Ethernet to my home network. Printing is reliable, but network scanning is intermittently failing. I have done extensive controlled testing and can reproduce a scanner-side problem using the printer's own Embedded Web Server (EWS), without relying on Windows scanning software.

Most important reproduction:
Using EWS Web Scan with two Letter-size pages in the ADF, PDF, 1-sided, Color, the printer begins feeding the document and can pause for approximately 15 seconds while a page is physically partway through the scanner. Usually it resumes. On one test, however, page 1 stopped partway and never resumed. EWS remained at "Scanning," while the printer's touchscreen had already returned to its normal home/ready screen.

When I pressed Cancel in EWS, the printer immediately fed both pages completely through the ADF and EWS reported "Scan canceled." I then reinserted the same two pages and made a normal two-page copy from the printer touchscreen; both pages fed and copied perfectly. This suggests that the ADF transport itself is not mechanically jammed.

There is also a reproducible color-mode difference in EWS:

• ADF / PDF / Color / 300 dpi: approximately 15-second pause while page 2 is partway through the scanner.
• ADF / PDF / Color / 150 dpi: same approximately 15-second mid-page pause.
• ADF / PDF / Grayscale / 150 dpi: continuous feed, no pause.
• ADF / PDF / B&W / 150 and 300 dpi: continuous feed, no pause.

With a flatbed Color 150 dpi EWS scan, physical acquisition completes normally, followed by approximately 25 seconds with the scan head stationary before it quickly re-homes and the result is returned.

I have also experienced an intermittent similar mid-page stall using HP Scan with the HP network scanner driver. Earlier today, after numerous successful B&W scans, my first 2-page Color 300 dpi ADF scan stopped partway through the first sheet. HP Scan remained at "Scanning." At that point WIA reported the device as busy. Cancelling HP Scan eventually released the WIA session, although the sheet remained physically stopped in the ADF. Later, the identical 2-page Color 300 dpi job completed successfully, confirming that the failure is intermittent.

There are additional problems with the Microsoft WSD/WIA scanning path and Windows Scan, including intermittent loss of WIA enumeration, "device not online," scans that fail without the scanner physically starting, and on two occasions Windows Scan reported successful completion but created a zero-page PDF. However, I do not believe this is solely a Windows/WIA issue because the mid-page scan stall has now been reproduced using EWS Web Scan, which does not depend on the Windows WIA scanner driver.

Controls already performed:
• Standalone multi-page ADF copying works reliably.
• EWS Web Scan can work successfully, but intermittently stalls as described above.
• Printing and normal network connectivity are reliable.
• The same pages that stall during a network scan immediately copy normally using the ADF.
• HP Scan can successfully perform B&W, grayscale and color scans, including 2-page Color 300 dpi; the failure is intermittent.
• Norton firewall was disabled during troubleshooting with no change.
• HP scanning software/drivers were completely removed and clean-installed.
• Printer firmware is 6.28.3.30-202606111700 (June 11, 2026).

I would appreciate HP investigating whether there is a known firmware/network-scanning issue affecting the 3302fdw, particularly the color ADF scanning pipeline. I can provide screenshots, exact WIA/PnP diagnostics, EWS configuration, and additional controlled tests if useful.

Update — multiple HP Scan failures reproduced, with additional isolation and recovery testing

I have continued testing and have now reproduced the problem several more times. The additional results help separate the MFP/network scanning problem from failures occurring specifically in HP Scan.

1. HP Scan color ADF failure reproduced repeatedly

During normal use with HP Scan using the HP network (NET) scanner, a 2-page color ADF scan failed as follows:

  • Page 1 began feeding and stopped partway through the scanner.
  • HP Scan remained at “Scanning.”
  • The MFP touchscreen returned to its normal Home screen.
  • The local Copy button on the MFP was greyed out/disabled.
  • While the scan was stalled, a direct WIA Connect() attempt returned “The WIA device is busy.”

I cancelled the scan in HP Scan. HP Scan initially displayed “The scan has been cancelled” and, after a short delay, returned to its normal UI without being closed.

At that point:

  • Direct WIA Connect() again returned CONNECTED SUCCESSFULLY.
  • The partially fed sheet remained physically stopped in the ADF.
  • The MFP's local Copy button remained disabled.

I manually removed the sheet. Copy was still disabled. I removed and reinserted the originals; the MFP correctly detected that paper had been placed in the ADF, but Copy remained disabled.

Interestingly, Scan to Email on the MFP showed an enabled Scan button. Entering Scan to Email and then returning to Copy did not restore Copy; it remained greyed out.

2. Restarting the MFP was required to restore the local scanner/copy state

I then shut down and restarted only the MFP. I did not restart Windows or the WIA service.

During startup I could hear the scanner head re-home. After startup, the local Copy button was green/enabled again.

Therefore, cancelling the failed HP Scan job was sufficient to release the Windows WIA connection, but it was not sufficient to restore the MFP's local Copy function. Removing/reinserting the paper and entering another scan function also did not restore it. Restarting the MFP did.

3. Controlled comparison: direct HP WIA ADF operation versus HP Scan

After restoring the MFP, I tested the underlying HP network/WIA path directly.

A direct WIA flatbed acquisition completed normally. I also performed a direct WIA ADF test with two sheets. Both sheets fed continuously through the ADF without the physical stall seen with HP Scan.

Immediately afterward, without restarting the MFP or WIA and without changing the hardware configuration, I opened HP Scan and attempted another 2-page color ADF scan.

The same failure occurred again:

  • Page 1 fed only partway and stopped.
  • It remained stopped for more than one minute.
  • HP Scan remained at “Scanning.”
  • Direct WIA Connect() returned “The WIA device is busy.”
  • The MFP displayed its normal Home screen.
  • The local Copy button was again greyed out.

After cancelling the HP Scan job, the cancellation dialog eventually closed, but the sheet remained physically stopped and Copy remained disabled. Exiting HP Scan did not cause the MFP to eject the sheet.

This is now the third HP Scan color ADF stall I have observed today. Color scans can complete successfully, so color does not deterministically cause the problem, but all three HP Scan stalls observed today occurred during color ADF scanning.

4. HP Scan can also fail while direct WIA acquisition is working

There is now an additional failure mode that does not involve the ADF.

After restarting the MFP and restarting HP Scan, I attempted a color flatbed scan. HP Scan immediately displayed:

I then changed HP Scan from Color to B&W, without restarting HP Scan, and attempted another flatbed scan. The HP Scan scanning dialog appeared briefly and then closed, but no physical scan occurred at the MFP and no image was acquired. Thus HP Scan's current failure state is not limited to color mode, even though the repeated mid-page ADF stalls described above have occurred during color scanning.

“An error occurred while scanning.”

While that HP Scan error dialog was still open, I connected directly to the same:

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301-3304 3388 (NET)

WIA device and requested an image transfer.

The MFP performed a completely normal flatbed scan and WIA returned 11,923,854 bytes successfully.

Therefore, at that exact moment:

  • the MFP was reachable;
  • the scanner hardware was operational;
  • the HP network WIA device connected successfully;
  • an actual WIA image acquisition completed successfully;
  • but HP Scan itself could not initiate the flatbed scan.

5. Network discovery remains operational

I also observed the HP Scan to Computer component during an MFP restart. When the MFP was powered off, it correctly reported the device unavailable and stated that it was continuing to attempt reconnection.

As soon as the MFP powered up and reached its Home screen, Scan to Computer automatically detected it and reported it available again, without restarting anything on the PC. This occurred even before I heard the scanner head finish re-homing.

I mention this because general network discovery/connectivity appears to be functioning normally even when the scanning problems occur.

Current observations

There appear to be at least two distinguishable symptoms:

  1. An intermittent network scan/session stall, which has now occurred through HP Scan and previously through EWS Web Scan. In the HP Scan cases, a sheet stops partway through the scanner, WIA remains busy until the job is cancelled, and the MFP can be left with local Copy disabled until the printer is restarted.

  2. An HP Scan-specific failure state, where HP Scan may either report “An error occurred while scanning” or appear to initiate a scan without any physical acquisition, even though direct image acquisition through the same HP network WIA device succeeds.

I am not assuming these necessarily have the same root cause, but they appear to be related to the network scanning path rather than a simple ADF mechanical problem. Standalone copying works normally after the MFP is reinitialized, and direct WIA acquisition can also work normally.

Printer firmware remains 6.28.3.30-202606111700.

Hi  @feiglinm

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Thank you for documenting the scan behaviour and the tests in such detail.

Kindly confirm the following information:

  • Is the printer connected directly to the router or through a network switch, extender, powerline adapter, or mesh access point?
  • Does the same colour ADF stall occur when scanning from another computer on the same network?
  • When the stall occurs, does the printer’s EWS show any scanner, memory, or network-related entry?
  • Is the printer using a reserved/static IP address, or is its address assigned dynamically by the router?

Kindly try these steps and confirm :

  1. Perform a complete power and network reset
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Disconnect the printer’s power cable and Ethernet cable.
    • Restart the router.
    • Wait until the network is fully available.
    • Reconnect the Ethernet cable and connect the printer’s power cable directly to a wall outlet.
    • Turn on the printer and test a two-page Color 300 dpi ADF scan through EWS.
  2. Check the Ethernet connection
    • Try another known-working Ethernet cable.
    • Connect the printer directly to a different LAN port on the router, temporarily bypassing any switch, extender, or powerline adapter.
    • Confirm whether the same mid-page pause occurs.
  3. Collect the printer diagnostics immediately after the behaviour occurs
    • Open the printer’s EWS by entering its IP address in a browser.
    • Open the Troubleshooting section and view or print the available diagnostic and event reports.
    • Kindly retain the report from immediately after the scan stalls, without restarting the printer first, if the interface remains accessible.
  4. Run a controlled comparison Using the same two sheets, test:
    • Color, 150 dpi, PDF
    • Color, 300 dpi, PDF
    • Grayscale, 150 dpi, PDF
    • Color, 300 dpi, JPG, if available

You can use the official HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw troubleshooting and diagnostics page  - Click here  .

The separate case where direct WIA image acquisition succeeds while HP Scan cannot initiate a scan also suggests an additional HP Scan software or session-state condition. Therefore, this currently points to two areas requiring validation: an intermittent printer-side network scan/session condition and a separate HP Scan application/session condition.

I hope this helps.

Thank you @Deep_World. I did some additional testing and was able to reproduce the problem through EWS Web Scan while capturing diagnostics.

To answer your network questions first: the MFP and my Windows 11 laptop are both connected by Ethernet directly to the same Netgear Nighthawk R7000 operating in AP/bridge mode. The R7000 has a wired uplink through an unmanaged Ethernet/PoE switch to the main Partner/Vantiva router.

The MFP has a manually configured static IPv4 address of 192.168.1.11. The router's DHCP pool is 192.168.1.100–192.168.1.249, so .11 is outside the DHCP pool.

Connecting the MFP directly to the main router is difficult because the MFP, laptop and R7000 are in my basement office and the main router is in a closet on another floor. However, the laptop and MFP are already hardwired to the same R7000. Also, my previous HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M276nw was connected in the same location, to the same R7000 using the same Ethernet cable, and used with the same laptop. I did not experience these scanning problems with that printer.

I have not yet tested from a second PC.

Regarding the controlled EWS tests you requested, I had previously tested ADF scanning at Color 150 dpi, Color 300 dpi, Grayscale 150 dpi and B&W 150/300 dpi. The color scans repeatedly showed a roughly 15-second pause during paper transport, while the grayscale and B&W scans fed continuously. On one earlier color test, the pause became an indefinite stall.

Today I repeated EWS Web Scan using ADF, Color, 300 dpi and two sheets. The first sheet fed partway into the ADF and stopped. I left it untouched for approximately 10 minutes and it never resumed. EWS continued to display "Scanning." Interestingly, the MFP touchscreen returned to its normal operating screen, Copy remained enabled, and there was no error message.

While the scan was still frozen, I downloaded the Event Log, Job Log and, importantly, the HP Diagnostics Package (.jdp) from Support Tools > Service Support. Thus the diagnostics package was captured while the failure was actually occurring, before I cancelled the scan or rebooted the MFP.

Neither log showed the active scan while it was frozen. I then clicked Cancel in EWS. The stopped first sheet immediately resumed feeding and the second sheet followed immediately, without any manual intervention. EWS then reported that the scan had been cancelled.

After cancellation, the Event Log acquired a new warning at 04-Oct-2026 17:07:00 with code F0.31.06.05. The Job Log acquired a corresponding entry at 17:07 showing Administrator / web scan job / HTTP Jobs / Canceled.

The fact that the ADF remained stationary for approximately 10 minutes but immediately resumed normal transport when the EWS job was cancelled seems important. This failure was reproduced entirely through HP's EWS Web Scan, without HP Scan, Acrobat, Windows WIA or a Windows scanner driver participating in the scan.

One additional comparison may help isolate the problem. Last night I performed 12 color flatbed scans: three different documents, each at 300, 400, 600 and 1200 dpi. All 12 completed normally, including the 1200 dpi scans. So far, the reproducible pauses/freezes appear associated with color + ADF, rather than color scanning generally or simply large scan data volumes.

I have retained the DiagnosticsPackage.jdp captured during the live failure, as well as the before/after Event and Job Logs and screenshots. Please let me know how you would like me to provide the .jdp file and whether there are any specific additional tests you would like me to perform.

Hi,

I've been trying to post a reply to HP Support Agent @Deep_World relating to my original post  HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw intermittently stalls during network ADF scans but it keeps getting rejected as Spam.

So I'm creating this new thread to provide the results of the diagnostic tests I was asked to perform since my detailed reply to the original thread has repeatedly been removed or held by the forum spam filter.

1. Network connection

The MFP and Windows 11 laptop are both connected by Ethernet directly to the same Netgear Nighthawk R7000, operating in AP/bridge mode. The R7000 connects by Ethernet to an unmanaged PoE switch, which connects to the main Partner/Vantiva router.

The printer is therefore not connected over Wi-Fi, powerline or mesh. Both the printer and PC are hardwired to the same Ethernet device.

Temporarily connecting the printer directly to the main router is physically difficult because the router and switch are on another floor. However, my previous HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M276nw used this same R7000, same Ethernet cable and same laptop without these scan-stall problems.

2. Second computer

I have not yet reproduced the test from another PC.

3. EWS diagnostics during an actual stall

I performed another controlled test using:

EWS Web Scan → ADF → Color → 300 dpi → two sheets

The first sheet fed partway into the ADF and stopped. I deliberately left it untouched for approximately 10 minutes. It never resumed.

During the entire stall:

  • EWS continued to display "Scanning."
  • The MFP touchscreen had returned to its normal operational screen.
  • The local Copy function remained enabled.
  • I downloaded the Event Log, Job Log and HP Diagnostics Package from EWS while the scan was still stalled.
  • Neither the Event Log nor Job Log contained an entry for the active stalled scan.

I then clicked Cancel in EWS.

Immediately after cancellation, the partially stopped first sheet resumed feeding and the second sheet followed immediately, without any manual intervention.

EWS then reported that the scan had been cancelled.

Immediately after cancellation, the logs recorded:

Event Log:
04-10-26 17:07:00 Warning F0.31.06.05

Job Log:
Administrator web scan job / HTTP Jobs / Canceled / 04/Oct/2026 17:07

I retained the DiagnosticsPackage.jdp captured while the scan was still frozen, as well as the before/after Event Logs and Job Logs, and can provide them to HP if useful.

I believe this reproduction is particularly significant because it occurred entirely through the printer's own EWS Web Scan interface. No Windows WIA, HP Scan application, Acrobat or Windows scanner driver was involved.

Also, when I pressed Cancel, the stopped sheet immediately resumed feeding and the second sheet followed normally. This would seem to argue against a mechanical ADF jam or paper-feed problem.

4. IP configuration

The MFP has a manually configured static IPv4 address:

192.168.1.11

The router's DHCP pool is:

192.168.1.100–192.168.1.249

Therefore the printer's static address is outside the DHCP allocation range.

Additional controlled testing

I also performed a high-resolution color flatbed control test.

I scanned three different documents, each at:

  • 300 dpi
  • 400 dpi
  • 600 dpi
  • 1200 dpi

All were scanned in Color, for a total of 12 color flatbed scans.

All 12 completed successfully with no freezes, including all three 1200-dpi scans.

This makes a simple explanation based on color image size, scanner memory load or network throughput less likely. The strongest pattern I have observed so far appears to involve Color + ADF scanning, although the failure remains intermittent.

Earlier controlled EWS tests also showed approximately 15-second pauses during some Color ADF scans at both 150 and 300 dpi, while comparable grayscale/B&W scans fed continuously. On one occasion the Color ADF pause became the indefinite stall described above.

Standalone ADF copying works normally when the scanner is in its normal state.

The printer firmware is:

6.28.3.30-202606111700

I would appreciate it if Deep_World or another HP support representative could review these results and advise what HP would like me to test next.

I can provide the DiagnosticsPackage.jdp captured during the active EWS stall, before/after Event Logs and Job Logs, and screenshots if these would help HP investigate the issue.

@Deep_World,
for the past two days I've been trying to post a response to your last message with the results of the tests you requested. My response keeps getting rejected as spam.  What's the best way to respond to you?

HP Recommended

Hi @feiglinm,

Thank you for the update and dont worry I have received the information sent on ‎10-04-2026 08:38 AM & .
Based on the results you shared, the information points away from a network issue, Windows driver issue, HP Scan software issue, or a mechanical ADF jam.

From your testing:

  • The issue occurs even when scanning directly through the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Flatbed color scans complete successfully, including at high resolutions.
  • Grayscale and black-and-white ADF scans complete normally.
  • The issue is primarily seen with Color + ADF scanning.

Kindly try this next steps and confirm :

  1. Test from a second computer on the same network
    • This will help confirm whether the behaviour is isolated to one device or consistently follows the printer.
  2. Perform a factory reset of the printer's network settings - Click here for steps
    • Reconfigure the network connection and retest Color ADF scanning.

Based on the extensive troubleshooting already completed, this suggests a condition related to the printer's Color ADF scanning process rather than a hardware paper-feed issue.

I performed the requested second-device test; but I used an iPhone connected by Wi-Fi to the same R7000 and accessed the printer's EWS Web Scan using Chrome. (I dont have a second laptop available just now).

I performed
two separate tests, each using ADF, Color, 300 dpi and two pages. Both tests produced the same behavior: page 1 scanned normally; page 2 was then pulled partway into the ADF and stopped for approximately 15 seconds. It subsequently resumed and the scan completed successfully.

This reproduces the characteristic Color+ADF pause twice from a completely different client device and operating system, using Wi-Fi rather than the Ethernet connection used by my Windows PC.

For clarity, I also used Chrome on the Windows laptop for the earlier EWS tests. Therefore, Chrome was common to both tests, but the client hardware, operating system and network connection were different.

The result seems to further isolate the behavior from the Windows PC, WIA, HP Scan, Acrobat, the Windows scanner driver, and the PC's wired Ethernet connection. It is also consistent with the approximately 15-second Color+ADF pauses I previously observed through EWS on the Windows PC, one of which became an indefinite stall.

I have not yet performed the network-settings factory reset. I wanted to report the second-device results first.

Hi @feiglinm,

I appreciate the detailed troubleshooting you've completed and the time you've invested in isolating the issue.

Based on everything you've tested so far, the results consistently show that the behaviour follows the printer rather than the computer, operating system, scanning software, browser, or network connection.

These findings indicate that the issue is likely related to the printer's Color ADF scanning process itself .

Kindly complete the remaining network reset test and share the outcome :

  1. Perform a factory reset of the printer's network settings using the steps provided here: HP Network Reset Instructions
  2. Reconnect the printer to your network.
  3. Perform another Color ADF scan test and observe whether the same pause occurs.
