Hi @JOSEPH196,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding scanner not scanning properly!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 scanner occasionally works but sometimes fails (especially if the scanning light doesn’t turn on), here are a few things you can try:

Check Scanner Light & Hardware Issues

  • Open the scanner lid and try scanning while looking at the scanner light bar.
    • If the light doesn’t turn on, it could be a hardware issue (burnt-out light or failing scanner module).
    • If the light flickers or turns on and off inconsistently, the issue might be loose wiring inside the printer.

🔹 Test the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder):
If the flatbed scanner isn’t working, try scanning from the ADF to see if the problem is with the scanner light or software.

Power Reset the Printer

Try a hard reset, which can sometimes fix scanner issues:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.
  2. Wait 2-3 minutes (to clear any stored power).
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. Try scanning again.

Update Scanner Drivers & Firmware

Sometimes, outdated drivers cause scanning failures:

  1. Go to HP’s driver support page (HP Support) and check for updates.
  2. Install the latest firmware and scanner drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.
  3. Restart your PC & printer after updating.

Test with HP Scan Doctor

HP has a built-in diagnostic tool that can automatically detect and fix scanning issues:
Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from here.
Run the tool and follow on-screen instructions to troubleshoot the scanner.

Try a Different Scanning App

  • If you’re using Windows Fax & Scan, try switching to HP Smart App or Windows Scan.
  • If the issue happens only in a specific software, it might be a software glitch, not a hardware issue.

 Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing works, you might need to restore factory settings:

  1. On the printer screen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Restart the printer and set it up again.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
