Posting a question & solution in one. I'm confident it will work for others as well. There's a question in this forum with a similar title, but my post is meant to be a quick compilation of what became an unclear solution. Thanks to @Libbey-Steve,  @Rhough33 and @Distael.

First, create a folder called Scans (for example) alongside all the other folders in your home folder, i.e. in the same directory as your Desktop Documents Downloads Movies Music Pictures Public folders. Right click on the folder you just created>Get Info>check the "Shared folder" box and under sharing and permissions make sure it includes an entry for "everyone" and "everyone" can Read & Write.

Second, in System Prefs>Sharing, ensure your computer name has no spaces, special characters or punctuation; for example mine was previously called Mike's 2013 iMac (2) and i changed it to 2013iMac.

Third, in the same settings pane make sure "File Sharing" is checked, and in the Shared Folders box add the folder you created in the first step, double-checking that "everyone" can Read & Write.

Fourth, in the printer's web access page, for Network Path use \\computername.local\foldername, mine became \\2013iMac.local\Scan (see screenshot). I also had to put in my username and password, just plain old Mike and my password. Someone in that other discussion mentioned that s/he had to make the username one word similar to computer name.

I hope this helps someone
