I FINALLY got this to scan again after reinstalling the software and setting it up five times. I just scanned two documents and it's stuck on "saving'. appearing to do so with a blue streak. It's been doing this for hours. I cancelled the 'save' - it does say that the "saving has been cancelled" but still continues with the moving blue streak. I can't close it either.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

What you do depends on the source of the problem.

A couple of ideas are included here ... Note that the second "cancel" method (kill the hung process) does not provide any help to resolve the underlying cause but it should help to get rid of the immediate problem ("saving for hours").

A less direct method involves stopping Print Services, clearing the queue folder, and restarting Print Services.

Print Queue / Print Service Reset

After a print job has been accepted, it is turned over the Windows Print Services for completion.

When a job is "stuck in the queue", it is sometimes due to Print Services having hung, become stuck, or otherwise failing to properly complete the job.

Start Here:  Print job stuck in Queue

and / or

First, check that Windows Update does not need to install updates (or Restart)

Settings > Update and Security > Check for Updates

NOTE:  If an update is already pending, install that update > Restart the computer and log in

Next

If the current print job will not cancel or if a previous print job is stuck in the queue,

and

If the issue is due to Print Services being stuck / hung / corrupted, Restart the Print Service

Manual Queue Reset

Details…

Control Panel > icon view > Administrative Tools > Services

Scroll down, find, Right-Click, and Stop Print Spooler Service

Open File Explorer (formally Windows Explorer)

Navigate to the folder and Delete the files from folder C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

Start Print Spooler Service

Direct Intervention > Kill the Offending Process

Unless there is something preventing you from doing so, you can certainly kill the hung / stuck process.

What else?

IF the underlying cause of the problem is related to the way the printer is interacting with your network, the following might be relevant.  If the information does not apply, simply ignore.
