After years of reliable service my printer has suddenly started doing everything wonkily.  If I scan from the glass to a file it is wonky, the same from the sheet feeder.  Also when I print or copy something it too is coming out at an angle.  The fact that it is the same whatever I do has me baffled.   Any ideas?

@SpookyLukey, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The fact that it's happening across scanning, printing, and copying does make this a bit puzzling, but don’t worry—I’m happy to help you troubleshoot!

Since everything is coming out at an angle, let’s try a few steps to get things back on track:

Check the paper alignment – Make sure the paper is loaded properly in the input tray. If it’s slightly off or not sitting flush against the guides, it can cause skewing. Try removing the paper, fanning the stack, and reloading it.

Inspect the rollers – Over time, paper feed rollers can accumulate dust or wear out, leading to feeding issues. Open the printer and check for any debris or paper dust. If they look dirty, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.

Run a cleaning cycle – The printer might benefit from a built-in maintenance cycle. You can find this in the printer’s settings under "Tools" or "Printer Maintenance."

Check for firmware updates – Outdated firmware can sometimes cause strange behavior. You can update the printer by going to HP’s support page and downloading the latest firmware for your model.

Reset the printer – A simple restart can work wonders. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.

If the issue persists after these steps, let me know—I’d be happy to dive deeper! Hope this helps. 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!

The tips are the standard tips for fixing alignment issues where either scanning or printing go out of alignment due to worn rollers etc.    That wouldn’t explain why scanning from the glass to a file gives a wonky scan (no rollers involved - and yes the paper was carefully aligned on the glass) - or why both scanning and copying/printing BOTH went wrong at EXACTLY the same time by EXACTLY the same amount.

Sorry - I should have said that I had already tried all the things you suggested!

@SpookyLukey, Thanks for following up! I really appreciate you trying all those steps already—it definitely helps narrow things down. And I see what you mean; if the issue were just with printing or scanning separately, the usual alignment fixes would make sense. But since it’s happening across the board (even when scanning from the glass), that’s definitely unusual.

A couple more things we can check:

🔹 Check the scanner calibration – If the printer’s internal calibration is off, it could be affecting both scanning and printing. Try running a scanner calibration (this is usually found in the printer’s settings under Tools > Scanner Maintenance).

🔹 Inspect the scanner lid and sensors – If the lid isn’t closing evenly or the scanner’s optical sensor has dust or smudges on it, that could distort scans. Try wiping the scanner glass and the white backing on the underside of the lid with a microfiber cloth and a bit of glass cleaner (spray it on the cloth, not directly on the glass).

🔹 Check for internal obstructions – Sometimes, even a tiny bit of debris inside the scanner path or printer can cause misalignment. If you haven't already, open up the printer and check inside for anything unusual.

🔹 Factory reset – Since this all happened suddenly, a factory reset might be worth a shot. It’ll restore the printer to its original settings and can sometimes resolve weird glitches. (Just keep in mind that you'll have to set up Wi-Fi and preferences again afterward.) You can find this under Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.

I hope this helps!
