Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Since I got a new laptop I am unable to scan to computer (or anywhere else) using the HP software. I get the message "The scan could not be completed. Make sure that the scanning software has been installed and configured to your computer and then try again". I had the HP Smart software installed but still got that message. So I uninstalled the software and then tried to download it again to reinstall it. Whenever I click the GET box on the Microsoft Store page, nothing happens. I tried fixing the MS Store problem per online instructions, but it didn't work. So now I need another way to download HP Smart. And once I reinstall it, I need to find out why scanning no longer works the way it used to!

Hi@macaroon2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing scan issues with the HP OfficeJet 4650 All-In-One Printer.

I recommend you root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it using the printer IP address.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

Add the printer using IP address -

1. Select “Start” and type “printers” in the search box.

2. Choose “Printers & scanners“.

3. Select “Add a printer or scanner“.

4. Wait for the “The printer that I want isn’t listed” option to appear, then select it.

5. Select “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname” , then select “Next“.

6. Select “TCP/IP Device” in the “Device type” list.

7. Type the hostname or the IP address of the printer. Select “Next“. To find the IP address of the printer, touch the Wi-Fi icon on the printer's control panel.

8. Windows should find the printer if the printer is on and configured correctly. You may have to specify more information. If prompted, Select the type of network adapter installed in the printer in the “Device Type” drop-down list. You can also click “Custom” to specify custom settings for the network printer. Select “Next“

I have a few recommendations

  • This can happen if there is an error while connecting the scanner. Run the Print and Scan Doctor tool on your computer. Select Fix Scanning to check your scanner connection. Run the diagnostics to resolve the issue.
  • System File Checker (SFC) is a built-in Windows feature that scans corrupted system files and repairs it automatically. Your HP scanning is not working because of some corrupted system files, so you can try SFC to fix the problem. Type cmd in the search box, right click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  • If the copy is working fine, let's enable the scan to computer.

  • Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results. HP Printer Assistant opens.
  • Click Scanner Actions, and then click Manage Scan to Computer.
  • Click Enable to activate the scan to computer option.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
