Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP LaserJet MFP M29w-M31
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I installed the Hp Software on my HP LaserJet MFP M29w-M31w it created 2 icons on my desktop:

1. HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31

2. HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31-HP Scan

Up until a week or so ago, both were working find when you clicked on them.

Now when I click on #2 above I get the following error message Box:

HPSCANERROR.jpgHPSETUP.jpg

This pic says The HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31 was not found.

The funny thing is that the scanner works from its EWS Scan page, HP Smart, Hp Scan and Capture  and an app called Windows Scan  from the Microsoft Store on my PC.

Before I started getting the above error message, the Hp SCan app would open and allow me to scan.

To be honest, this issue may have started AFTER I installed the Windows Scan app.  SO once I send this I'm going to remove the Microsoft Store Windows Scan app, and restart the PC and see if that makes any difference and report back.

Pertaining to #1 above,  when I click on it I get an administrative prompt for DeviceSetup.exe, and then the following:

HPSETUP.jpg

Obviously I have a current wifi connection and as stated above all of the programs seem to work as far as printing or scanning goes except for the HPScan program as described in #2 . Also in the past when I clicked on  #1 icon the windows equivalent of the EWS menu would open up.

I might add that the windows 10 printer and scanner selections on settings, system, devices and printers all work fine.

I don't know why the images won't show.

I uninstalled ALL the HP software and device drivers, restarted the system and then re-installed the drivers and software.  I noticed that the new software had a newer version number. Also installed a newer version of the firmware . Everything works now. SOLVED

I removed the Windows Scan app and restarted the system and get the same result.  I also re-installed the SOftware and drivers and it detects the printer correctly and notices that I'm connected by wifi and aks me to connect the USB cable which I do, and installation completes successfully. All the other programs work, but I am still getting the errors from the 2 desktop icons.

I installed and ran the latest version of Hp Print and Scan doctor 5.6 and it says Failed to communicate with your device.  BUT all the other programs, HP Smart, HP Scan and Capture, Hp Support Assistant,Windows Settings,Printers and devices, all of that works
