HP Scan and Capture
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just installed HP Scan and Capture on a new laptop.

It has installed in portuguese! And there doesn't seem to be an option to change it.

Portuguese is installed on my laptop, but not set as the display language.

How can I change the language to English?

Well, it was a "long shot" (unlikely to work).

Regionalization is not my area of Expertise -- I have only the one language installed.

If you are interested in a Workaround:

There are other scan options available in Windows 10, including the Scan provided with the Full Feature Software for the printer and other "stand alone" options / programs.

  • Printer Software (Full Feature Software > Printer Assistant > Print, Scan & Fax > Scan a Document or Photo)
  • HP Scan and Capture

HP Scan and Capture is available in the Windows Store.

The following document provides a link to the software and says it will install in English -- as long as the installation is not overridden by the Language on your computer, this might work.

Reminder:  You must have the Drivers (Full Feature Software) installed for your printer.

You will likely need to Uninstall the existing version:

Windows key >  Settings wheel Settings_Wheel_2.JPG  > Apps > Apps and Features

Scroll down, find, Click on HP Scan and Capture > Uninstall

Restart the computer and log in

Open, find link, and install the English version in this document:

Unfortunately, that just takes you to the Windows Store, which is where I installed it from before (I think the "in English" just means that the Store is only available in English).

Looking through the registry, I can see an entry for the app with a language key:

LanguageList: _pt-BR;en-GB;en-US_standard_100_GB_LT

Comparing this with other apps, I see that usually I have _en-GB;pt-BR etc. However, changing the order, moving the underscore etc has no effect and, after every start of the app, the value is overwritten with the default.

I have English (UK) set as my display language, but I have English (US) and Brazilian Portuguese also installed, though they are not the display language and portuguese never has been.

It would appear that HP Scan and Capture is reading the localization settings incorrectly.

I really liked HP Scan & Capture as it was just about right for my every day scanning needs. And, in fact, I do speak Portuguese, so it wasn't the end of the world! I didn't mention before, but exactly the same set up on Windows 8.1 worked perfectly and it was partly that that inspired me to look for a solution.

However, these other options look excellent and I will explore them over the next few days. You will be happy to know that first impressions are that HP Scan doesn't have the same issue as HP Scan & Capture.

Thanks for your help.

You are welcome.

Well, speaking Portuguese is a benefit in any case -- the skill is very useful if (some of) your software also insists on speaking Portuguese.  Smiling.  I suspect the "fix" is simple -- perhaps one of our Experts who routinely install more than one language can answer / comment on this...

Be sure to take a look at

HP Scan Extended

There are videos / examples for using the software, including these how-to videos from our own HP Expert greenturtle:

Scan multiple photos with Auto Crop

Scanning Multiple pages using the ADF and Scan Glass

I have included a few examples of using the software in the Dragon document.

The "Auto-Detect-Photo" feature is very nice -- try it for extracting images from a page / document placed on the printer glass.  It can also scan and scan (into separate image files) several photos placed on the printer glass.

Happy Printing!
