Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I use the HP Scan and Capture application to scan, it seems as though the scanning is taking place, but then the system exits the application prematurely, leaving no scan file.  I am attached to a wireless HP OfficeJet J4680 printer.  This function had been working fine in the past.  I haven't done any upgrades, etc., and am on a Windows 10, 64-bit platform (unchanged from when this had been working previously)   I uninstalled and re-installed the software, restarted both laptop and printer, etc., but still experiencing same issue.  HP diagnostics indicate that software drivers are up to date.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Do you have an old copy of the Full Feature Software / full driver installation package downloaded and saved on your computer?

If yes, is that the package you used when you "uninstalled and re-installed the software"?

What?

According to the "how-to" comments included with the application, HP Scan and Capture requires that the full driver printer software already be installed (and working).

Windows 10 no longer provides a full driver printer software package in Software and Drivers

Instead, the user is offered the instructions to install the Built-in Windows Print Driver.

HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver

Scan?  See Section FAQ > How do I use the printer functions with the built-in driver?

Example

Scan documents and photos: Complete scan jobs with a Windows app that works with the built-in driver.

  • Windows Fax and Scan: In Windows, search for and open Windows Fax and Scan. Click New Scan, and then select your printer.
  • Windows Paint: In Windows, search for and open Paint. Click FileFrom scanner or camera.
  • Windows Scan app: In Windows, search for and open the Windows Scan app. If it is not listed, go to Windows Scan (in English) to install it.

HP printers - Windows built-in driver fails to install

The Windows print driver is not the same thing as the full driver printer software.

The Built-in print driver might NOT support the HP Scan and Capture application.

HP Scan and Capture

Available from the Microsoft Store (formally Windows Store) - Requires Windows 8 or higher

Download-Save-Install   HP Scan and Capture

What to do?

Depends on your situation --

  • Restart Everything, including the router that controls your network

Next,

  • Uninstall the full driver printer software from Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in > Install your saved Web Pack installation package for the Full Feature Software > Restart the computer and log in

AND

  • Check HP Scan and Capture - If it does not work, Try uninstalling the app > restart computer > "Get" a fresh copy of the application from the store.

OR

  • Use the proffered alternatives, for example, Install the built-in driver, get / use Paint, Windows Fax and Scan, or Windows Scan

Hello -

Thanks for that information Dragon-Fur!

To further clarify my situation, all of the scanning works for me in the HP Scan and Capture and also in the HP Scan Extended tools.  The issue is attempting to scan from HP SMART.   I've uninstalled and re-installed from the specific printer set of downloads, but it still does not work from there. I suppose i do have a work-around with these other tools, but would still like to get it working from HP SMART.

Thanks again !
