Hi @Eduardo19751,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Smart Tank 581 can print but fails to scan. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

    a. Check Connection Type
If you are using USB, ensure the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer.
If using Wi-Fi, make sure both the printer and computer are connected to the same network.

    b. Restart Devices
Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
        Restart your computer.
Plug the printer back in and power it on.

    c. Update or Reinstall HP Smart / Drivers
Open HP Smart and check for any updates.
If scanning still fails, uninstall and reinstall the latest HP Smart app or full-feature printer driver from HP’s official site.

    d. Check Scan Settings
Open HP Smart → Scan → Scan Settings.
Ensure the correct source (scanner glass or document feeder) is selected.
Set the scan type to color or black & white as needed.

    e. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
It will automatically detect and fix common scanning problems.

    f. Check Firewall / Security Software
Temporarily disable firewall or antivirus software that may be blocking the scanner communication.
        Try scanning again after disabling.

I hope this helps.
