HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Purchased a new desktop with Windows 11. Now I can't scan from the printer (HP ENVY 4520). All other functions work just fine (print, copy). I can scan using HP Smart but not by choosing the scan option on the printer itself.  Get "unable to communicate with the scanner".   I have tried running Scan Doctor and that also can't connect to the printer. HELP....

It seems like the communication issue between your HP ENVY 4520 printer and the new Windows 11 desktop is preventing you from using the scan function directly from the printer. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot this issue.

 

Check the connection:

  • Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as your computer (if using Wi-Fi). Try printing from the computer to verify the connection.
  • If connected via USB, make sure the cable is properly connected and not faulty.

Reinstall the Printer Drivers:

  • Go to the HP Support page for the ENVY 4520 and download the latest drivers for Windows 11.
  • Uninstall the current drivers from Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program, and then reinstall the drivers.
  • Alternatively, you can use Windows Update to check for updated drivers that might resolve compatibility issues with Windows 11.

Check Windows Scanner Settings:

  • Open the Windows Settings and go to Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select your HP ENVY 4520 printer and click on Manage.
  • Make sure that Let Windows manage my default printer is turned off, as it can sometimes interfere with scanning.

HP Scan and Capture App:

  • Try using the HP Scan and Capture app (available from the Microsoft Store) to scan. This app can sometimes resolve issues with scanning.

Run the Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Run the Printer Troubleshooter and Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to detect and fix any problems with your printer.

Check for Windows 11 Compatibility:

  • Ensure that there are no compatibility issues with Windows 11 and your printer by checking HP's support page for any specific updates or advice related to your model.

Firewall/Antivirus:

  • Sometimes, security software can block communication with the printer. Try temporarily disabling your firewall or antivirus to see if it resolves the issue.


After these steps, try scanning again to see if the problem is fixed.

Not resolved. I can't find the latest drivers for Envy4520 on the HP Supp[ort page. When I run HP Print and Scan Doctor, it flags the drivers as an issue. But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the current drivers. I followed your instructions to go the HP Support site but nothing I tried on there works. Guess I'll just have to use HP Smart to scan. Printers/scanners are such a pain ion the @$$. 😒

I have hp deskjet 4400, but for mine, scan wouldn't work on new windows11 puter. Hp said my printer was too old and I was SOL. After some research, downloaded microsoft windows scanner app, follow the instructions and now you can scan again. Pinned the app to start menu for easy access.
