I can scan a document on my HP smart tank 580 but I can’t find where the scan is saved. I think I’ve looked everywhere but I can’t find it. How do I designate exactly what folder the scans land in?

Hi @SmartTanker,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

It is a common frustration to scan a document only to have it disappear into a default folder. By default, the HP Smart app usually sends scans to your Documents or Pictures folder, but it often requires you to manually click "Save" after the scan is finished to actually move it from the app's temporary memory to your computer's permanent storage.

  1. Locate the Manual Save Trigger
    • Complete your scan within the HP Smart app as you usually do.
    • Look at the bottom right corner of the preview screen and click the Save button.
    • Do not close the app before this step, or the scan will be discarded from the temporary cache.
    • Wait for the file explorer window to pop up, which allows you to choose your destination.
  2. Designate a Specific Destination Folder
    • Once the "Save" window appears, navigate to the specific folder where you want your scans to land (e.g., a new folder on your Desktop).
    • Type a name for your file in the File Name box.
    • Click Save to finalize the location; the app will remember this folder as the starting point for your next scan.
    • Check the "Always use this location" box if it appears in your specific app version to automate the process.
  3. Adjust Default Settings in HP Scan (Optional)
    • Open the HP Printer Assistant or HP Scan software on your computer (separate from the HP Smart app).
    • Select Save as PDF or Save as JPEG from the shortcut list on the left.
    • Click on More > in the top right corner and select the Destination tab.
    • Click Browse next to the "Save Location" field to permanently change the default landing folder for all future scans.

For more details on managing scan files, you can visit the HP guide on scanning with the HP Smart App.

Are you scanning using a Windows PC, a Mac, or a mobile phone?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
