HP scanning software for my previous printers offered the facility to scan the photographic image alone - such as HP Solution Center, without the remaining glass area. HP Scan and Capture does not appear to offer that facility. That being the case, do I have an alternative option of more sophisticated software, say?
There is no option to scan to .png either, as there was previously.

Sounds like you have been contacted by a scammer.
For your issue, completely remove and deinstall the printer from your computer. Go to the HP web site and download and reinstall the Full Featured Software and Drivers and reinstall the printer again.

Select Everyday Scan to get PNG format.

Please try this scan solution:
HP Scan Extended
For Windows: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"
Make searchable PDFs scans with this free scanning software - https://www.naps2.com/

I thank you for your prompt reply and suggestions.
I do not see "Select Everyday Scan" in HP Scan and Capture.
I had seen mention of HP Scan Extended elsewhere, downloaded and installed it. Clicking it in All apps opened a window, "HP Scan" and a progress bar running. It brought up a message, eventually, starting, "Scanner communication cannot be established."
I received an earlier private message from the HP Support Forum, apparently, stating, "You have received a private message in the HP Support Forum, and in the body of the message, "But its hard to provide you the appropriate solution for this issue in community" and to telephone +44-020 3289 7008 (UK) for assistance. The person who answered seemed vague when I told him the gist of my post, and wanted to gain control of my PC. This, I was not prepared to do.
I am using the scan facility in Paint.net in the interim, which scans the image alone.

I regret I must give up on this issue: HP technical support spent an hour on the telephone helping me to set up my replacement Envy 5646 in August. I do not wish support or me to go through that again.
