HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I'm unable to resolve the  inconsistent crooked scan issue that I'm experiencing with my new HP Pro MFP M477fdw printer.  I've tried cleaning the wheels that are in the center of the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) with no improvement.  It seems to go in straight, but somehow gets skewed (slightly but noticably) at the bottom of the scanned document.

Ie... the top part of the replicated document is square and lines up very close to the original, but the bottom right is  skewed or slanted and sits 5 or 6 mm lower on the page.  It becomes progressively worse when scanning multiple pages.

Please help as this is a nighmare to have to manually load each document on the flatbed glass, which is the only option to get a straight scan at the moment.

Thanks!

Its a shame there hasn't been a response to this as I have the same issue.

I've had the same issue... seen other responses from HP which are inadequate.  I need "straight" scans from the ADF as well.

Same issue I have with MFP M281fdw.

I know it's a different model, but it is interesting to me that this is a wider problem.

Spent about 2 hours with suppport (at times, given the completely random steps they were taking, if felt like a "deterrent" rather than an attempt to help). After all that they decide to send a replacement printer. The new printer has THE SAME problem.

Any fix yet?

Sorry to hear that you're experiencing the same problem.

Unfortunately, I've resigned myself to scanning pages one-at-a-time when the scan needs to be professional, which is most of the time.  Due to the lack of response from HP, it's probably a manufacturing flaw that cannot be overcome with a software patch (but that's complete speculation on my part).

We have the same problem(A skew of about 1mm ). Firmware and all other updates have been installed. Rollers are clean. The scanner portion of our printer has been replaced. HP has recommended the following things:

  • It is a design flaw which exists in the low-end models. An HP technicians recommended purchasing a higher-end model such as the 577 or better to alleviate this type of issue
  • Unplugging the printer and holding down the power for 30 seconds to a minte and replugging the printer. This has not helped
  • Use HP Extended Scan, which has helped for after-the-fact scans, rotating to a positive .5 or .6 -- this is a workaround and not feasible in a corporate environment
  • An HP suppot rep mentioned, "Document skew is a known issue and is not fixable, it's due to the printer design. If the skew is within 3mm, it's considered acceptable"
  • There's a secret scan calibration menu. However, trying to calibrate the scanner has not fixed the issue. Here are the instructions if you like:
    1. selecting Setup
    2. pressing the empty space between the home icon and the question mark
    3. pressing the Return arrow
    4. quickly selecting Setup again
A 2ndary Service menu will be revealed. Perform a scan calibration using the following steps:
    1. select 2ndary Service
    2. scroll down to Scan Calibration
    3. from the new menu, select 600 color ScantoHost
The printer will perform the calibration. After it is finished (just a few seconds), scan a document using the ADF, ensuring that the paper guides are set correctly. The skew should be lessened, but several repeats of this procedure may be necessary to achieve satisfactory results.

A response from HP is much appreciated here

Same issue on a 577dw.  Had ADF replaced with NEW part, cost over $300.

Guess what?

SAME ISSUE

Clearly a design flaw.

HP, please respond with a solution.

Has anyone actually got this fixed as we  have been having the same trouble since we bought it in june 2017. We have spent ages on the phone to HP numerous times, and as a business we cant be on the phone for 2-4 hours at a time. We bought this model specifically for the auto feeder and its rubbish, HP havent offered to replace our unit nothing and after much to and fro eventually ran out of warranty and too late to return obviousy. From a small business point of view this printer is rubbish there are far better printers on the market just wished we had bought one. Also if its a manufacturer error ( which it seems to be based on the amount of complaints) HP should re-call these printers, remove from the self as not as described. I cant see how trading standards within UK have allowed this product to continue to be sold.

As pointed out by previous posts, on-site technicians, and occasionally HP (although they recommend to purchase a more expensive model), this is a known defect. Recommend to return this one and purchase a similar model with a different company that specializes in scanning, such as Canon
