Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Envy 4520
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I am unable to scan with my HP Envy 4520 printer, for the past week although I have been able to scan recently in the past.  I am also not having any problems with printing using this printer.

Typically, I open the HP Envy on my desktop, select Scan, and it works fine.  Now, I get an error message that says "The HP Envy 4520 series was not found."  I have repeatedly tied to download the HP Print and Scan doctor, but when I click on the .exe file to open, I get an error message that says "Extraction failed: Cannot delete output file"

Based on a previous thread that I found from 12/2017 in this forum, I have also closed any other instance of the Print and Scan Doctor as follows:
Close all other programs you have open.
Press Ctrl, Alt, and Del on your keyboard at the same time.
Click on Start Task Manager.
Click on the Applications tab.
Click on the Print and Scan Doctor listed.
Click on End Task.

I also read in that prior thread that: If you are still unable to open the Print and Scan Doctor, click on the Processes tab and do the same with anything that has HP in the name.  However, I did not find any other Processes tabs containing HP that were running.

I also tried to scan directly from the printer by selecting Scan on the printer itself, but it says, "No Computer is found".  I have checked both the USB cable and the WiFi settings, and they are fine (note that I can print using the USB or using WiFi; just can't scan).

Please offer a solution.  Much appreciated!

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting a scanner connection error, I am glad to assist you.

Check Windows Image Acquisition settings

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is a Windows service that helps communication between the computer and scanners. If WIA is not activated, scan jobs can fail.

  • In Windows, search for and open View local services.
  • In the Services window, scroll down the list and find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Look at the Status and Startup Type values.
  • If the status is Started or Running and the Startup Type is Automatic, WIA is running correctly. Skip to the next step.
  • Making sure WIA Status is Running, and Startup Type is Automatic
  • If the status is Disabled or no status displays, right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), click Properties, click the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type dropdown menu, and then click Start.
  • If the Start button is grayed out, go back to the Services menu, make sure Remote Procedure Call, Shell Hardware Detection, RPC Endpoint Mapper, and DCOM Server Process Launcher are running and set as Automatic, and then start WIA.
  • Try to scan.
