Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Officejet 4610

Imaging devices.png

Hi have a computer with Windows 11 and a HP Officejet 1610 printer/scanner with a USB connection to the computer. Until recently I was able to scan, but suddenly I was not...checked the Device Manager and, under Imaging Devices, I notice that the "USB Scanner device" disappeared, leaving only the "SCSI Scanner Device" showing (which I do not use).

Ever since I have tried to reinstall the printer software (from the CD, from the internet), but without success regarding being able to scan.

Is there any way to get that "USB Scanner device" back?

Thank you

Full function printer drivers can be downloaded here: 4610

After installing the full feature driver package, click the windows key and select all apps and find HP.

Look for HP Scan.

If HP scan is not present then use HP Smart. get HP Smart from the Microsoft store if needed or if you want the newest version. You will have to sign into HP Smart using your HP account. The latest version as of Jun, 2024 is 154.2.1072.0 (USA English). If you do not have this version then go to the Microsoft store, find HP Smart, and click "update". If the button "update" is missing then you need to run WSRESET from the Windows search bar.

To put HP Smart (or HP Scan) on the desktop:

For Windows 10, click Start. For Windows 11, click Start and click All apps. This will show (see above) a list of all apps you have installed in Windows. Find the target app from the list, drag and pull the app from the Start menu to the desktop. This will create a desktop shortcut for the app installed from Microsoft Store.
The following video is an example of how to put an app on the desktop.

Let me know if you need more help if you want to use Wi-Fi to print instead of the USB cable.

Hi Beemer Biker, thank you so much for your prompt reply.

I had already downloaded and installed the Full function printer drivers that you mention and, when I select all apps, I find HP, but no HP Scan (see image 1)

So, I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and the result was the same as shown on Image 1. When I try to scan, this is the image I get (image 2).

When I use HP Smart to “Add a Printer, it recognizes that I have a printer connected, but cannot go on from there, it cannot find its status.

Thank you again

The printer is not on the network or off-line.

If English is not your native language or if you wish to get additional information not covered below, then use the HP and Microsoft support assistants. The latest HPSA supports 36 languages and can be downloaded here. Microsoft's AI assistant is in the latest Windows 10 and 11 releases and there are instructions here on how to enable the AI. Microsoft's AI assistant (Copilot) has a microphone button and supports natural language processing.

You may need to reset your printer.

Disconnecting the USB cable may still leave the printer in the wired or Wi-Fi mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some printers have a semi-reset, a full reset and a factory reset. Please refer to the user manual to find the difference. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Factory resets cannot be revealed in this forum. To do a factory reset of your printer, you must contact HP.

Click here for world-wide contact info

Wi-Fi reset instructions and videos (if any) are shown below. Generally you have 2 hours to connect your printer after performing the Wi-Fi reset. Note that a reset video may show a slightly different model than yours.

The steps below are Wi-Fi only and do not perform a factory reset.
Microsoft's Copilot may provide alternate solutions.

  1. Press the (Wireless) button
  2. Scroll to and select Wireless Settings
  3. Select Restore Defaults
  4. Select Yes

Wi-Fi connection

Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The router needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the router.

This video shows how to connect to the router: 4610-4620 WPS pin
A simple connection to the router can be done by using the WPS pushbutton method. This is explained on page 199 in this User Manual.

Software

HP updates software periodically. Downloads shown below may be old. You should always visit the Software and Download page to look for new releases. You may need to select an operating system (OS) first. If windows 11 is missing then use 10. You can go as far back as Windows 7, 64bit to get missing drivers. After selecting the OS click the blue Open all button to view all downloads.

Full function printer drivers can be downloaded here: 4610 4620

Documents

All documents are available at the below HP site. The user and reference manuals show how to get status reports and analyze error indicators on printer that have no control panel.

All HP manuals are here: 4610-4620

Printer Reference

One or more printer reference is listed below. Typically your printer may be part of a series and use the same software and manual. The exact spec may be different.

Specifications for your system: 4610 4620

Let me know if you have a flex system (Wi-Fi boosters or repeaters) as the setup is much more complicated when using the router type of connection.

Thanks again BeemerBiker for you reply!

My printer is a 4610 and connects to the computer via a USB cable, no WiFi or network connection. I have tried everything you mentioned (including the HP Print and Scan Doctor and HP Smart) but I cannot make the Printer connect to the computer (please see Image 10 attached).

It seems that some piece of software ("USB Scanner device") disappeared from the printer regarding scanning, and it does not appear when I reinstall the printer software. Maybe only a Factory reset can restore it to the scanner.

Bring up the device manager, select that SCSI device and change the driver

BeemerBiker_0-1728840187591.png

Read this article where it mentions near the bottom "let me pick from a list of available drivers"

Look for your USB driver or one that mentions TWAIN or WIA.   Your system uses  Twain or WIA.

If necessary, uncheck the [X} Show compatible hardware.

You may need to reset

Hi BeemerBiker,

Thanks for your message! Before continuing I must say that for years I have been using the machine as a scanner ONLY, as the ink cartridges where impossible to get in the country where I lived. Following the instructions of your message I was able to find and install the “USB Scanner Device”…but still wouldn’t scan…

So, as a last attempt, I tried to reset the machine, following the link for a video that included in your message “How to Reset HP Officejet 4610/4620. I decided to perform a “Semi full Reset”. The problem is that, maybe because I have not used the printer for so long, it was not loading the paper, so I got stuck at the “Printing alig

nment page” (image20 attached) and there seems to be no way to stop it. Several comments on the video say they are stuck too, to which the author advised to “If you want to skip alignment, you can press "OK" on the message that tells you to do alignement”, but then it is too late, there is no OK to press. So, if you have no resource or idea to stop this “Printing alignment page”, the machine will be useless…

Thanks a lot for your patience and replies!!!

You need to have ink in the machine according to this post

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Archive-Read-Only/HP-Printer-stuck-on-printing-alignment-page...

It is trying to print and unless there is a cancel button you cannot cancel out.

Possibly a firmware update may help
