I spent over 5hrs with the on-line support (I presume a Bot) trying to resolve a scanning issue with A5 documents. In short A5 and many other paper sizes are not selectable in the Paper Size config form. Only a few pre-loaded sizes are selectable.
I followed the web based support and the instructions do not result in the ability to get access to customised or the full range of paper sizes available in the Printer config.
After several re-installs of the Easy Start routine (HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software (Internet connection required for driver installation)) as recommended by the online support the issue still remains. HP have stated HP Scan is no longer available, but this link takes the user to the latest software and drivers. Included is HP Scan!

There are inconsistencies in the support community pages. HP Scan still appears to be available and supported.
What is t recommended HP scanning software? How to access more than the default page size options?

All software and drivers are up to date. All the suggestions above have been canvassed and exhausted.
HP Support pages refer to several legacy software instances (HP Scan, HP Print and Scan Doctor) have been retired and users should use HP Smart going forward. Selecting paper sizes is no longer available in the Scan app.
Begs the question why does HP include software apps that are no longer supported in the recommended "HP Easy Start Printer Setup" software.
As HP Scan has been replaced with HP Smart, I guess the case is closed.

@RossD2, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It seems you're experiencing difficulties with selecting A5 and other paper sizes for scanning using your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw. Here's how you might address this issue:
Verify Printer Software and Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers and software installed. You can download and install drivers from the HP support website. This often resolves issues related to paper size detection.
Scanning Preferences: Check the scanning preferences in the HP scanning software. Some applications may have limitations on selectable paper sizes. Use the HP Scan software or another compatible software that allows selection of a wider range of paper sizes.
Manual Paper Size Input: If A5 is not listed as a default paper size, try manually entering the paper dimensions if the software allows custom size configuration.
Use HP Embedded Web Server: Access your printer’s built-in web server by typing the printer's IP address into a web browser. From there, check if you can configure paper sizes under scan settings.
Firmware Update: Make sure your printer's firmware is updated to the latest version. Firmware updates can resolve various compatibility issues including those with paper sizes.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
