This is a mindboggling case. The HP Support assistent on my desktop advices me to upgrade the driver software of my printer/scanner. This was already a time-intensive case, software download that takes 10 to 15 minutes. But the driver can't be updated. You have to remove the software, restart the computer and wait again to download the driver software to install. After installation, the scan software was removed and I cannot use the scanner anymore from my desktop.

Tried to open a case. Need to register. After 1 day I received a confirmation that .. my account is disabled ?? So, you need to sign up before you can file case with an account which has been disabled?

The upgrade software also missed the finesses of useability. The continue button was on a window below the window of the download. If you find the continue button, that a new window below gives a progress indicator that moves very slow. If you were not aware, you might think the installation stucked again ...

Anyway, beside the facts the installation software is porely written, I still cannot use my scanner anymore. Which is NOT a printer issue, but a software issue on my desktop!

(this is the short version …)

Try this URL "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8600\bin\HPScan.exe" I have to use this since the HP Printer Assistant does not want to open properly after a critical update.  HPSmart will scan but will not do OCR like HPScan.  FYI

I created a short cut on my desktop by going to the app, right-clicking selected and create a shortcut.

The software has been removed due to driver update where I was forced to remove the previous driver before I could install the updated version. So the HPScan.exe executable disappeared from my disk.

Don't feel bad I came across the same app too and used it via HP's suggestion.  After about 7 hours if installing I canceled the app and went to bed.  Everything still functions on my 8600 after the cancel.
