How can I enable "Scan to Computer" for Linux (Fedora)? Since the printer isn't next to my computer, I want to perform the scan directly from the printer itself rather than from the computer, so I don't have to keep walking back and forth.

Here is instructions on how to do it. I do not know how long the url will be good so I am pasting some of the info below
Yes, you can scan from the HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e to a Linux PC, though the direct "Scan to Computer" feature from the printer's physical control panel is typically designed for Windows and macOS rather than Linux.[ref_1]Instead, you initiate and manage the scan from the Linux PC using scanning software.[ref_1, ref_2]
How to Scan on Linux with the HP 8122e:
- Network / eSCL Scanning: Connect the printer to your local network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and use a standard Linux document scanning application like Document Scanner (Simple Scan). When selecting the scanner source, choose the eSCL network scanner option rather than proprietary drivers if prompted.[ref_1, ref_2, ref_3]
- USB Connection: Alternatively, plug the printer directly into your Linux PC via a USB cable, open your Linux scanning app, and detect the device locally.[ref_1, ref_2]
- HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing): HP provides official Linux support tools and drivers via HP Linux Imaging and Printing, which helps manage device integration on compatible Linux distributions.[ref_1]

Yes, standard scanning works, but initiating the scan from the PC isn't practical in my setup. Because my computer and printer are in separate rooms, I would have to walk back and forth for every single page—placing the document on the scanner, walking to the PC to click "Scan," returning to load the next page, and so on.
Is "Scan to Computer" (initiating the scan directly from the printer's physical panel to a Linux PC) supported on Linux at all, or is there a way to enable push-scanning from the device itself?

Sorry, I misunderstood the answer provided by the AI bot. I went and asked it again and made it clear the I need the results stored on the linux system.
@Valsimot is correct in that you cannot use the Scan To Computer
but but but (do you have "scan to network folder??)
It seems that one can scan to a shared folder and if that folder is on the linux system it will show up there. There is also scan to email but you asked about the linux pc. Note that ubuntu is mentioned below only because the AI bot knows I am running 24.04 and have an HP 8610 printer.
However, since your network bench is running Ubuntu (as indicated by your system logs), you can bypass this limitation entirely using the printer's Scan to Network Folder (SMB) or Scan to Email features. This allows you to walk up to the printer, press a button, and have the file appear on your Linux system.
Option 1: Scan to Network Folder (Recommended)
This method allows you to select a folder from the printer's touchscreen, and the scanned file will immediately drop into a directory on your Ubuntu machine via a Samba share.
- Install Samba on Ubuntu: Open your terminal and run:bash
sudo apt update && sudo apt install samba
Use code with caution. - Create and Share a Folder: Create a folder where you want scans to go, right-click it in your file manager, select Local Network Share, check Share this folder, and allow guest access (or set a specific password).
- Configure the Printer: Open a web browser on your PC, type your printer’s IP address into the URL bar to open the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS), navigate to the Scan tab, and select Scan to Network Folder.
- Add the Path: Enter your Ubuntu PC's network path (e.g., \\your-computer-ip\your-shared-folder) and save the profile.
- Scan from Console: Walk up to the printer, select Scan -> Network Folder on the touchscreen, pick your computer's profile, and hit start.
