HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

Mac OS 14.5...scan to computer not working.  Printer sees my computer (wireless connection) and when I initiate a scan from the printer, it starts the process and my computer acknowledges the process but the scan will not complete.  Print function works fine from the same computer.  Tried updating printer/scanner software and firmware, and also tried removing the printer/scanner/fax from my computer and re-loading but nothing seems to work.

Hi @A320Bruno,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with Scan to computer.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-In-One Printer is unable to scan to your Mac running macOS 14.5, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer and Mac Connection

  • Ensure that your printer and Mac are connected to the same Wi-Fi network if using a wireless connection.
  • If using a USB cable, make sure it is securely connected to both the printer and the Mac.

2. Update Printer Drivers and Software

  • Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers and software for your printer.
  • Install any available updates to ensure compatibility with macOS 14.5.

3. HP Easy Scan App

  • Download and install the HP Easy Scan app from the Mac App Store if you haven't already.
  • Open HP Easy Scan and see if you can scan from the application.

4. Enable Scan to Computer

  • On your Mac, open HP Easy Scan.
  • Select your printer from the list.
  • Go to the Scanner tab and ensure Enable Scan to Computer is checked.

5. Check Printer Settings

  • On the printer's control panel, go to the Setup menu.
  • Navigate to Network Setup and ensure that Scan to Computer is enabled.

Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @A320Bruno,

Please find the next set of steps below.

6. Reset the Printing System (macOS)

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
  • This will remove all printers from your system. Re-add your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 and try scanning again.

7. Check Firewall Settings

  • Sometimes, the firewall settings on your Mac can block communication between the printer and the computer.
  • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall.
  • Ensure that the firewall is not blocking the HP software or printer communication.

8. HP Smart App

  • Download and install the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store.
  • Open HP Smart and add your printer if it’s not already added.
  • Try scanning from within the HP Smart app.

9. Reboot Devices

  • Restart both your printer and Mac.
  • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

10. Check for macOS Updates

  • Make sure your Mac is up to date with the latest version of macOS.
  • Go to System Preferences > Software Update to check for updates.

11. Use Image Capture

  • Open Image Capture from the Applications folder.
  • Select your printer from the list of devices.
  • Try scanning directly from Image Capture.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be necessary to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
