I am trying to setup scan to email on my HP MFP M479fdn. I don't know why I'm getting this error message. I have other printers that work fine. There is no firewall or configuration blocking it. There is no server authentication required either.
- Cold reset and restored to factory settings.
- Unplugged power for 1 minute
- SMTP, Port, DNS, IP all correct
- Firmware up to date

I as well as several others are experiencing the same issue. Created a post several days ago. - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Scan-to-Emil-not-working/m-p/8986909

I really do not like the generic failure messages provided as they make troubleshooting more complex. If you are scanning to an external mail server such as Office365 or Google make sure that you have created the correct app password for that service and used that password. Other mail services might have similar requirements and you may need to contact the company that manages your SMTP service.
For on premise exchange servers I have found that in some cases for user name you need to use domain\username instead of just the user name.

@repairatrooper Thank you for your response. I'm using Exchange on-prem with an internal anonymous relay connector. There should be no auth or security other than IP address filter. Our other Xerox printers work fine.
