I cannot get "scan to email" working on my OfficeJet Pro 8720. It works on my HP Laser printer, but not this printer. It used to work for me. Does anyone know how to get this function working again, or has HP changed something that it no longer works?

@SJFriedrich, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If Scan to Email was previously working on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 but has stopped, here are the steps to troubleshoot and fix it:
Check HP Firmware Updates
- HP has made changes to some services via firmware updates that may have affected the Scan to Email feature.
- Check if a new firmware update is available:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- If an update is available, install it and restart the printer.
Verify Email Settings
- If the printer’s settings have been reset or changed, Scan to Email might need reconfiguration:
- Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find the printer’s IP Address on the control panel under Network Settings.
- Enter the IP address into a web browser.
- Go to Scan > Scan to Email Setup.
- Ensure the SMTP server settings are correct.
- If using Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo, check their latest SMTP configurations.
- Some email providers require app passwords instead of the regular account password.
- Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
Check SMTP Authentication & Security Settings
- If your email provider enforces 2-step verification, you may need an app password.
- Some email providers require STARTTLS or SSL/TLS encryption:
- Example for Gmail:
- SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
- Authentication: ON
- Requires App Password: Yes (if 2FA is enabled)
- Example for Outlook/Office 365:
- SMTP Server: smtp.office365.com
- Port: 587
- Encryption: STARTTLS
- Authentication: ON
- Example for Gmail:
Reconfigure Scan to Email
If settings seem correct but the issue persists:
Reset the Scan to Email Profile:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Scan to Email > Remove the existing profile.
- Re-add the email configuration.
Try HP Smart or Web Services:
- Ensure HP Web Services is enabled in EWS.
- Sign in to HP Smart and check for any configuration issues.
Try a Different Email Provider
- Some providers (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo) have changed their security policies.
- Test with a different email (e.g., Outlook, ProtonMail) to see if the issue is provider-specific.
Perform a Hard Reset
- If none of the above work:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for 5 minutes.
- Plug it back in and restart.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
