Hello.  Using an HP Officejet 9012, I am trying to scan to a WD My Passport portable hard drive. The printer doesn't recognize that the hard drive has plugged in to the USB port.  The USB port is functioning as it will recognize a thumb drive.  All suggestions appreciated!

I understand the issue might be specific to the compatibility between your HP OfficeJet 9012 printer and the WD My Passport portable hard drive. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

 

  • Check USB Compatibility: Ensure that the WD My Passport portable hard drive is formatted in a file system that is supported by both the printer and your Mac (such as FAT32 or exFAT). If it's formatted in a file system that's not supported, the printer may not recognize it.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve compatibility issues with external devices. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP OfficeJet 9012 printer and install them if necessary. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Check Power Requirements: Some external hard drives require more power than a USB port can provide. Make sure that the WD My Passport portable hard drive is receiving enough power. You may need to connect it to an external power source if it's not.
  • Try a Different USB Port: If your printer has multiple USB ports, try plugging the WD My Passport portable hard drive into a different port to see if it's recognized.
  • Use a USB Hub: Sometimes using a powered USB hub can help resolve power issues with external devices. Connect the WD My Passport portable hard drive to a powered USB hub and then connect the hub to the printer.
