Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

The following issue started just recently when I opened my HP Scan app and got a firmware update notice for my ScanJet Pro 2000 s2 scanner.  I'm using HP Scan Basic Device Software version 63.7.6442.  I did the update and everything seemed ok.   Typically, I scan a 1 or 2 sided document as a searchable pdf.  I have the settings setup in the "Save as PDF" short cuts features.

The problem I'm having is when I go to save the scanned pages to the pdf file.  I click save in the HP scan app and the windows file browser pops up.  I navigate to where I want to save it, I click on a file of my choosing in the browser to establish a base file name that I want and then click save in the windows browser.  That's when windows pops up and says "there is a file with that name already, do you want to replace it?"  If I click yes, it overwrites the file, if I click no/cancel, nothing gets saved.   It didn't behave that way before the firmware update.

Also, on the previous version of HP Scan Basic Device Software version 63.6.6364.25288 and also before the firmware update, I would do the same steps and it would save file with that base name and then append the appropriate "_0000" document counter number to the filename.  Nothing got overwritten and the filename would be what ever filename I clicked on and have the _0001 or _0002 etc. document counter appended.  Why does this happen with the latest HP Scan Basic Device Software version and the firmware update for my ScanJet Pro 2000 s2?

Hi @uz2bsky,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Thank you for providing the detailed information. From your description, the change in behavior appears to have started only after the firmware update and the update to HP Scan Basic Device Software.

A few questions first:

  • Does this happen with every scan or only when saving searchable PDFs?
  • If you manually type a new filename instead of selecting an existing file, does the scan save correctly?
  • Have you tested saving to a different folder, such as Documents or Desktop?
  • Is the scanner functioning normally otherwise, including scanning and OCR processing?

Based on the behavior you described, it appears that the software is no longer automatically appending the document counter suffix (_0001, _0002, etc.) when an existing filename is selected. Instead, Windows is recognizing the selected file as the actual target filename and prompting to overwrite it. Since this behavior changed following the software and firmware updates, it may be related to a change in the HP Scan application rather than an issue with the scanner hardware itself.

Please try the following:

  • Create a new custom shortcut in HP Scan and verify whether the filename settings include any automatic numbering options.
  • Test by manually entering a new filename instead of clicking on an existing PDF.
  • If available, uninstall the current HP Scan Basic Device Software and test with the previous version that was working correctly.

The HP Community is primarily a peer-to-peer support forum, and issues involving software behavior changes after a firmware or application update may require direct investigation by the ScanJet support team.

If the issue persists after the above checks, I recommend contacting HP Support by phone so the team can review the software behavior, firmware version, and application logs, screenshots, or a short recording showing the filename overwrite prompt

Let us know the answers to the questions above and whether manually entering a new filename still appends the document counter.

I'm an HP Employee.
