HP Scanjet 300 Flatbed Scanner
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I don't use my scanner often, so this is the first time of use since I upgraded my Mac to a Mac Mini 2018 running Mojave 10.14.4. I have used HP Easy Start to install drivers, but it tells me it is unable to connect to the Scanjet (see screenshot). During the install process, it correctly identified that the Scanjet 300 was the product I wanted to install. I tried unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable in, and the cable is connected directly to the Mac's USB3 port. I have restarted the Mac. I have removed and re-run HP Easy Start. Same problem. Interestingly the second install hasn't installed HP Utility. When I ran HP Utility (when it was installed) it could 'see' the Scanjet, but couldn't connect. Any help gratefully received

@FenTigger, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Have you tried scanning using Image Capture?

Resetting the scanner might correct some operating issues.

Follow these steps to reset the scanner.

  1. Close the HP scanning software, if it is open.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable that connects the scanner to the computer.

  3. Reconnect the USB cable that connects the scanner to the computer.

  4. Verify the following USB cable settings.

    • Make sure that you are using the USB cable that came with the scanner.

    • Make sure that the USB cable is connected correctly to the rear of the scanner. The USB symbol on the end of the cable (the connector) should be facing up. When connected correctly, the USB connector will feel slightly loose. When connected incorrectly, the USB plug will feel too tight.

    • Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB port on your computer. If the USB cable is connected to a port on the back of the computer, move it to a port on the front or side of the computer.

  5. You might need to turn the computer off, wait 60 seconds, and then turn the computer on again.

Additional troubleshooting steps-

Connect the scanner to your Mac, ten follow HP Easy Start below, it should locate your scanner drivers and HP Easy Scan:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/HP_Easy_Start.app.zip

If you experience any issues install the following drivers:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-esse...

Next, install the HP Easy Scan below:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-easy-scan-1_8...

And be sure to add your scanner under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Let me know if this helps.

Cheers 🙂

I've tried all these steps, and it still doesn't work. I use the scanner a lot for my work as an illustrator. Just got a new laptop, and really don't want to get a new scanner. Is this a known problem with Scanjet 300 and Mac 10.14 Mojave? Is there a solution? I would be very thankful for any help
