Microsoft Windows 11

I have just upgraded to Windows 11 with a new machine but the driver that I have for my HP Scanjet G 4050 is not accepted by Windows. Is there anyway I can install a driver to run the scanner. The item is still working perfectly and it seems a shame to have to replace it with a new one.

Hi @SayerbeansUK

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

You do not need to replace your working scanner right away. Since the HP Scanjet G4050 is an older model, the available HP software may require compatibility settings when used with Windows 11. Before considering replacement, please try the following clean reinstallation procedure:

Disconnect the scanner

  • Turn off the HP Scanjet G4050.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.

Remove the existing HP software

  • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • Look for HP Scanjet G4000 series, HP Photosmart, or other HP scanning software associated with the G4050.
  • Uninstall the applicable HP scanning software.
  • Restart the computer when prompted.

Download the HP Scanjet G4050 software

  • Go to the official HP Support website: https://support.hp.com/
  • Search for HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner.
  • Download the latest available software/driver package for the supported Windows version.

Run the installer in Compatibility Mode

  • Right-click the downloaded HP setup file and select Properties.
  • Open the Compatibility tab.
  • Enable Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 10.
  • Also select Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click Apply > OK.
  • Right-click the installer again and select Run as administrator.

Complete the installation before connecting the scanner

  • Follow the HP installation instructions.
  • Do not connect the USB cable until the installer specifically asks you to do so.

Reconnect the scanner directly

  • Connect the Scanjet G4050 directly to a USB port on the computer.
  • Avoid using a USB hub or USB extension cable during setup.
  • Allow Windows time to detect and configure the scanner.

Restart and test

  • Turn the scanner off, wait approximately 60 seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart Windows 11.
  • Try scanning using the installed HP scanning software or another TWAIN-compatible scanning application.
