HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Product number: A7F64A Serial number: Edited

Using HP smart to scan. It worked fine at first, then it just closed. I reopened HP smart, and all my scans were gone. Does the program auto save in a case like this or am I just going to have to start over?

Hi @1950Mike,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Absolutely, let’s track down your scans together! I know it’s unsettling to reopen HP Smart only to see your recent work vanish. Here’s how to quickly locate and preserve your scanned files:

Where HP Smart Automatically Saves Scans

By default, on your Windows 11 PC, HP Smart saves scans in one of these folders:

  1. C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\HPApp\Scans
  2. C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Pictures\HPApp\Scans

To check quickly:

  • Open File Explorer, paste %UserProfile%\Documents\HPApp\Scans or %UserProfile%\Pictures\HPApp\Scans into the address bar, and press Enter.

How Autosave Works in HP Smart

HP Smart doesn’t auto-save beyond its default folder. After scanning, the app usually shows the Preview and a Save button, prompting you to confirm the location:

  • If you closed the app before clicking Save, the scan may not have been moved into your Documents/Pictures folders yet.
  • Sometimes, saved files wind up in another user-programmed folder, or in OneDrive, if you have cloud syncing enabled. Search Windows for “HPApp” or “HP Smart” to check.

How to Prevent Losing Scans Going Forward

  1. Scan → Preview screen: Always click Save before closing the app.
  2. Confirm Save Location: The dialog shows exactly where the file is being placed.
  3. Change Default Folder
    • In HP Smart, go to Settings (gear icon) → Scan Settings.
    • Choose your preferred save folder, like “My Documents\Scans” or Desktop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

The response I received was very helpful. Unfortunately, I had already started over and rescanned the 30 pages. The information though was very useful if this happens again. Thank you for responding.
