Hi @cuttyface,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your scanned documents saved to a USB memory stick won’t open on your HP computer. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the file format
– Open the USB drive and confirm the file type (PDF, JPG, PNG, or TIFF).
– Make sure your computer has an app that supports that file type (for example, a PDF reader for PDF files).

Try opening the file with a different program
– Right-click the scanned file and choose Open with.
– Select another app such as Photos, Paint, or a PDF reader to see if it opens.

Verify the scan completed correctly
– Check the file size on the USB drive.
– If the file size is 0 KB or unusually small, the scan may not have saved properly and needs to be rescanned.

Copy the file to the computer
– Drag the scanned document from the USB stick to your desktop or Documents folder.
– Try opening it from the computer instead of directly from the USB drive.

Check the USB drive for errors
– Safely eject the USB drive, then reconnect it.
– If prompted, allow Windows to scan and fix any errors on the drive.

Update or reinstall the scanning software
– If the files still won’t open, update or reinstall the HP scanning software or HP Smart app.
– Rescan a test document and check if the new file opens correctly.

I hope this helps.
