HP ENVY 7645 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I only scan using the HP Smart scan function via my laptop.  ADF was working fine for years, then recently suddenly stopped.

When I use HP Smart to scan via the ADF,  I make sure automatic document feeder is indicated in the source. and the document is in the feeder correctly.    I activate scan and the printer screen says document not detected.  However I can do scans from the printer glass.  Also, making copies via the ADF results in the same no  document detected.  but copies can be made using the printer glass.  I ent to an HP web page that instructed in the cleaning of the paper pick roller and the separator pad.  This did not get the ADF to work  I rest the printer ans lap top to no avail.  What is causing the scanner's ADF not to detect when there are documents in the ADF.  DECT

Hi @Steve_7645,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

It sounds like your HP ENVY 7645 e-All-in-One Printer's Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is experiencing issues detecting documents, even though the scanner glass works fine. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially fix the ADF issue:

1. Check Document Placement:

  • Ensure Correct Placement:
    • Make sure the documents are placed correctly in the ADF. They should be aligned properly and not exceed the ADF's paper size capacity.

2. Clean ADF Components:

  • Clean the ADF Rollers:
    • Dust or paper residue on the rollers can affect document detection. Clean the rollers gently with a lint-free cloth and distilled water. Be sure to let them dry completely before using the ADF again.

3. Inspect the ADF for Obstructions:

  • Check for Paper Debris:
    • Open the ADF and carefully check for any small pieces of paper or debris that might be obstructing the mechanism. Remove any debris you find.

4. Reset the Printer:

  • Power Cycle:
    • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal sensors.

5. Update Printer Firmware/ drivers:

  • Check for Updates:
    • Go to the HP Support website or use the HP Smart app to check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can resolve software-related issues.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Steve_7645,

Please find the remaining steps.

6. Check for Firmware or Driver Issues:

  • Reinstall Printer Drivers:
    • Sometimes reinstalling the printer drivers can fix communication issues between the printer and your laptop. Download the latest drivers from the HP Support website and reinstall them.

7. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Use the Troubleshooter:
    • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support website. This tool can diagnose and fix many common printer issues, including problems with the ADF.

8. Verify ADF Settings in HP Smart:

  • Check Scan Settings:
    • Ensure that the HP Smart app is set to use the ADF as the source. Sometimes, settings can be inadvertently changed.

9. Check ADF Hardware:

  • Inspect ADF Mechanism:
    • Check if the ADF mechanism appears to be functioning correctly. Listen for unusual noises or observe if the ADF is moving the document correctly.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with the ADF on your HP ENVY 7645 e-All-in-One Printer.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact HP Phone Support for further assistance. There may be a hardware issue with the ADF that requires repair or replacement.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thanks for your assistance.  I already did much of what you suggested.  I will more thoroughly check the  rollers for any debris.  Mechanically, everything appeared fine from my last effort.  The only thing I did not try was the reinstallation of the printer driver and firmware update,

As far as making sure the documents are inserted correctly.  That doesn't appear to be the issue.  What I do notice is the documents when inserted previously resulted in a "ding" sound when the  document was inserted and touched the roller letting me know the document was inserted properly and ready to scan.  The sound is no longer there and seems to be associated with the failure of the ADF to pull in the document(s).  When I raise the document feeder and release and restore and lock in the part of the ADF that drops down, to inspect the components, it does make the "ding" sound.  But it doesn't restore to the ADF to its functionality.  I have been very gentle with the components and only cleaned the rollers with a lint free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.  All the components seem intact.  I do notice the lower rollers on either side of the separator pad to do not spin freely.  They have a little play back and forth but don't turn 360 degrees - at least not manually.  Are they supposed to function like that, like guides or are they supposed to spin freely?   Or is there a mechanical mechanism that turns them when the feeder operates and are not meant to turn by hand.?  I do not want to force them.  Maybe reinstalling the printer driver and firmware update may work.  I can't tend to this now but will try later and let you know.
