Officejet 6500a Plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After my Officejet 6500a print head failed I bought another Officejet 6500a but got the usual "scanner communication could not be established" even after uninstalling & reinstalling. I did get it working however so would like to share for the benefit of others.

The print & scan doctor initially didn't help, but I tried running it again with Administrative rights and heard the scanner operate. The print & scan doctor told me everything was OK & to try a test print. I was optimistic at this point, but got the same error again.

I next tried initiating a scan from the panel on the printer itself & got the same error, but unexpectedly it also mentioned the IRIS OCR software on the printer so thought I would also try reinstalling this. Having uninstalled it I thought I should try the old shutdown & restart. It then started working.

My feel is that it was running the Print & Scan Doctor with Administrative rights followed by the restart that fixed the problem, but I can't completely discount the IRIS OCR uninstall being a factor (NB I haven't re-installed it, so think it's unlikely).

Welcome to the HP Community

HP Officejet 6500A Plus Special Edition e-All-in-One does not have full-featured drivers for Windows10, hence you are facing this issue.

However, Windows contains built-in print drivers for many types of printers. These drivers support basic printer functionality for most print jobs.

Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879 for Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver

If you have HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer lets, try the installing the HP Officejet 6500A Plus/Plus Special Edition e-All-in-One - E710s Full Feature Software and Driver.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hmm, what about the Windows 10 drivers here then:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-6500a-e-all-in-one-printer-series---e7...

They are the drivers I am using and seem now to be working OK after my troubleshooting steps.

Are you saying you don't recommend the drivers HP offer for Windows 10 & everyone should use the basic drivers in Windows instead?

Update the firmware for the printer using this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-6500a-e-all-in-one-printer-series-e710/4083974/mod...

Restart the printer.

I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:

Remove the USB if connected

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-6500a-e-all-in-one-printer-s... to download and install the HP Officejet 6500A Plus/Plus Special Edition e-All-in-One - E710s Full Feature Software and Driver.

I think you are an automated bot of some sort, not an "employee"

Updating the firmware and performing a root level installation should resolve the issue.
