macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi, I'm on Mac OS 13.7.1 Ventura. I have an HP Color Laserjet MFP M283fdw which I use for writing and scanning.

A few months ago, the scanner stopped working, giving a Scanner Error 23 on the unit's display. If I try to use the HP Smart interface, it says "There was a problem during scanning. Check the scanner and try again."

I've turned the unit on/off and unplugged it many times, that does not help. I am wondering if it's a hardware problem...?

Please help - thank you.

Hi @doctorfloyd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The Scanner Error 23 on your HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw typically indicates a hardware malfunction related to the scanner assembly. However, before concluding that it’s a hardware issue, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take.

Perform a Full Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source and disconnect all cables.
  3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  5. Check if the scanner error persists.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Outdated firmware can cause operational errors. Update your printer’s firmware:
    1. Download the latest firmware from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page for your printer.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions to update.

Check Network and Connectivity

  • If you’re using the printer over a network, ensure it has a stable connection.
  • Connect the printer to your Mac via USB temporarily and test scanning through Preview or the Image Capture app.

Test Scanning Using Another App

  • Use macOS's built-in Image Capture app:
    1. Open Image Capture from the Applications folder.
    2. Select your printer in the sidebar.
    3. Try scanning to see if the error persists.

Clean the Scanner

  • Dust or debris on the scanner glass or mirrors can cause errors.
    1. Turn off and unplug the printer.
    2. Open the scanner lid and clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner (do not spray directly on the glass).
    3. Check for dirt under the scanner lid and clean it.

Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • Resetting your printer to factory settings might resolve software glitches:
    1. Open the printer’s control panel.
    2. Navigate to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
    3. Confirm the reset and test scanning again.

Verify if the Error Appears During Copying

  • Since scanning and copying use the same hardware:
    1. Place a document on the scanner bed.
    2. Press the Copy button on the printer’s control panel.
    3. If copying works, the issue might be software-related.

Inspect for Hardware Damage

  • If the error persists:
    • The scanner assembly or light bar might be malfunctioning.
    • Inspect the scanner area for any physical damage or obstructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden! Appreciate your assistance.

I did everything as you instructed, and am having no luck. It prints just fine, but no scanning. It now says Scanner Error 13 on the device's display. No luck scanning from Image Capture either - it tried, I heard a part move slightly then stop.

I think it's a hardware issue. What's next? I saw some option to extend the warranty by a year, is that the easiest? It's a great unit when working, but I do need scanning functionality. Would appreciate any thoughts.
