Hi @RuthB77,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that after completing the alignment test, your scanned documents are showing vertical lines when viewed online. This usually means the scanner glass or the ADF scanner strip has a small smudge, dust particle, or ink residue on the narrow left strip of the glass. Even a tiny mark will appear as long vertical lines in scans and copies.

Here are the correct steps to fix it.

Step 1: Clean the Scanner Glass

  1. Lift the scanner lid
  2. Clean the large main glass using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water
  3. Clean the thin ADF scanner strip, which is a very narrow glass piece on the left side
  4. Make sure there are no fingerprints, dust, or spots

Dry the glass completely before scanning again.

Step 2: Clean the Underside of the Scanner Strip

Some HP models have dust under the white backing strip.

  1. Lift the lid
  2. Check the white underside
  3. Wipe gently with a clean dry cloth

Lines on scans are almost always caused by this part being dirty.

Step 3: Run a Copy Test

Use the printer to make a copy:

  1. Place a blank page on the glass
  2. Press Copy
  3. Check if the lines still appear

If the lines show on copies and scans, the issue is definitely optical.
If it only happens online or in the app, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Reboot Printer and App

  1. Turn off the printer
  2. Unplug it for 60 seconds
  3. Plug it back in
  4. Restart your phone or computer
  5. Scan again and check the result
