Hi @heathermineratm,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating that you're encountering issues with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw's scanner. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the problem.
Power Cycle the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Check Connections:
- Ensure all cables (power, USB, network) are securely connected.
- If using a USB connection, try using a different USB port or cable.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Check for any available firmware updates for your printer model on the HP Support website.
- Download and install any updates that may be available.
Check for Error Messages:
- Look for any error messages on the printer’s display panel. If there are any, note them down as they may provide more specific information.
Perform a Factory Reset:
- Go to the printer's control panel:
- Navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
- Confirm the action and follow any prompts.
Advanced Troubleshooting
Check the Scanner Unit:
- Open the scanner lid and ensure there’s nothing blocking the scanner glass or the document feeder.
- Clean the scanner glass and the white strip underneath the lid with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website. It can help diagnose and fix scanning issues.

Check Software Installation:
- Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart app or the HP printer drivers installed on your computer.
Reset the Printing System (for Mac users):
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system. Then, re-add your printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
