Why does it say the scanner is unavailable?  It is out of black ink. I was assured it would still scan even after it runs out of ink, so I bought it.

More data: I asked the dealer and also called HP.  Both said it would continue to scan after the ink runs out, so I bought it. Also, I did not use the printer or its scanner for up to 8 months.  Today I did try to print to see if that worked. It went through all the motions (asked me to load paper, automatically fed paper, sounded like it was printing, but the page it spit out was blank). So it seems the overall machine is good, but then why does it say the scanner is unavailable when I try to scan?
