HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw

My printer works but my scanner doesn't.  I get an error that the ADF is jammed or the scanner is busy.

I'm ready to return this printer as I have already spent too much time trying to get the scanner to work.

Hi @JoyLady

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for posting, and I can understand your concern. Your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw is printing correctly, which suggests the device is powered on and communicating properly, but the scanner is reporting "ADF jammed" or "Scanner busy" messages.

Based on the information provided, please try the following:

Open the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) cover and carefully inspect the entire paper path. Even a small piece of paper, label material, packing residue, or protective tape can trigger a false jam condition.

Lift the scanner lid and clean the scanner glass and the narrow ADF scan strip using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Allow the glass to dry completely before testing again.

Power off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer for about 60 seconds, reconnect it directly to a wall outlet, and power the printer back on.

From the printer control panel, attempt a standalone copy using the scanner glass rather than the ADF:

  • Place a document on the flatbed glass.
  • Select Copy.
  • Start the copy job.

If you are scanning from a computer, open the HP App, remove the existing printer instance if present, add the printer again, and then test a scan from the HP App.

Ensure there are no documents loaded in the ADF during testing and verify that the ADF input tray is fully seated.

If both the flatbed scanner and ADF produce scanner-related errors after completing the above checks, the scanner assembly may not be initializing correctly. The results of the flatbed copy test will help determine whether the issue is limited to the ADF or affects the entire scanning system.

Please let us know:

  • Does copying from the scanner glass work?
  • Do you receive the same error directly from the printer control panel, or only when scanning from the computer?

That information will help us guide you with the next troubleshooting steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
