Whenever I scan using the flatbed, the scanner always scans A4 letter size. I'd prefer it to scan letter size. Is there a way to set letter as the paper size default? Thanks!

Welcome to the HP User Community.

Yes, there are several places where the scan size can be adjusted.

For Windows:

Install the Full Feature Software which includes HP Scan

Use HP Scan - possibly create a Custom Shortcut or use "Detect" to let the printer find the edges of the content.

Webscan

Least likely to impact the setup is to use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to adjust the Scan > Webscan settings.

Why?  Webscan runs independent of other printer software.

Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

This option requires a network connection and EWS

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Webscan feature  is not available on Laser printers

If the printer is on the network,

If the EWS feature is available on your printer,

First Time Use Only:  Enable Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan
  • Click Apply to save any changes

Use Webscan

  • Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
  • Tab Scan > Webscan
  • Set up Webscan the way you want it - for example, set the Source to ADF
  • Click Start Scan to scan your document / image using Webscan
  • After the scan is complete, Save the scan to your computer.

HP Scan - part of the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software

HP Scan supports editing the scan templates (to some extent) AND the ability to create Custom Scan Shortcuts.

Set the Page size to one of those available OR always use "Detect Photos" (for images) or "Detect Content" for PDF.

Example - HP Scan - Main Menu

 Example 2 - HP Scan - Main Menu

====================================================================

HP Scan and Capture

In addition to installing the Full Feature Software,

Consider installing HP Scan and Capture

Example - HP Scan and Capture - Menu Options

====================================================================

HP Smart - Windows

HP Smart is a bit tougher to control - the application is meant for use with a multitude of printer models, each with a wide range of features.  It is necessary that the application is versatile.

In general, HP Smart - Windows > Scan grabs the content it "sees".

You can modify the default edge points and / or you can Crop the size and shape of the scanned content the way you want it done.

Partial Example - HP Smart - Windows - Scan (Photo) > Optional Edit > Edit Set / Options

Hi Dragon-Fur, thanks for the extensive reply! It turns out my printer has been developing multiple idiosyncrasies, so HP is going to replace it. If I have trouble with the paper size again with the new printer, I'll keep your post in mind. Thank you!

@RedDogOffice

You are welcome.

Hopefully replacing will take care of "all of it".

You will have to reload the software - that can be done when you receive the new printer.

No idea, sorry.

I don't have any MacOS systems.

I would guess it is a matter of selecting the Page Size for the scan area.

Best you open a new question and ask about your printer and your Operating System.
