Hey,

Since I've purchased the Multifunctional laserjet printer/scanner I'm having frequent issues with scanning.

I need to be able to scan documents from a medical software and from time to time the scan job is not executed.

Or a blank page is transfered or the scan job hangs leading to a freeze in my medical software program as well. The only thing that helps is rebooting the PC and powering off/on the printer to get it started again. But since patients are waiting during those actions this is very anoying and stressful.

We've been testing with the HP scan tool or even the windows scanner program as well same deal, the scanner hangs.

The firmware is updated and all advice found on this forum was executed as well.

Printer is connected with ethernet cable. Sleep mode is set to several hours, IP v6 is disabled, fixed IP address, I've done it all.

Please come up with a fix for this. It's a pity when investing in "professional material" that the cheap ass multifunctional devices in our home have better performance levels...

Kind regards,

Lien

Hi @LienVR, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already tried many troubleshooting steps, but since the issue persists, let's go deeper into potential causes and solutions:

Disable WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) and Use TWAIN Instead

  • WIA can sometimes cause compatibility issues with third-party software.
  • Try disabling WIA and forcing your software to use TWAIN or HP’s own scanning driver.
  • To disable WIA:
    1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
    2. Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in the list.
    3. Right-click it, go to Properties, set Startup type to Disabled, and stop the service.
    4. Restart your PC and test scanning.

Check for Conflicting Software (Antivirus, Security Software, Firewall)

  • Some security software may interfere with scanner communication.
  • Try temporarily disabling your antivirus and firewall, then test the scan function.
  • If the issue stops, create an exception for HP scanning software in your security settings.

Test with HP Scan Extended (HP's Alternative Scanner Utility)

  • Download HP Scan Extended from the HP website and try scanning from there instead of Windows Scan or the built-in HP tool.

Adjust TWAIN Timeout Settings (Registry Edit Required)

If your scanning job hangs frequently, the timeout settings in Windows could be an issue:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Win + R, type regedit, press Enter).
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\Debug\DeviceData
  3. Look for a Timeout value. If not present, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named Timeout.
  4. Set it to 60000 (decimal) (which equals 60 seconds).
  5. Restart your PC and test.

Use an Alternative TWAIN-Compatible Software

  • Try scanning with a program like NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2), which allows direct TWAIN control over your scanner.
  • If NAPS2 works fine, the issue may be with your medical software’s scan integration.

Change Printer Port & Protocol

Since your printer is on Ethernet:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer → Printer Properties
  • Go to Ports tab → Select Standard TCP/IP Port
  • Click Configure Port and set RAW mode (Port 9100) instead of LPR.
  • Also, try enabling SNMP Status if disabled, or disabling it if enabled.

Check Power Management & Sleep Mode Settings

  • Even though you set sleep mode to several hours, some power-saving features may still interfere.
  • Disable “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” in Device Manager under
    • Network adapters (Ethernet/Wi-Fi adapter)
    • USB Controllers (if scanner is connected via USB)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

Thanks for your help!

Disabling the WIA service was not a good option. I was unable to scan with the TWAIN scanner driver in the medical software, I had to renable it.

I've configured a new network port for the printer like you've suggested with SNMP enabled.

Disabled turn off this device to save power for WiFi and ethernet adapter.

No firewalls active except the windows firewall, I don't suspect this to be the cause.

I will follow up next week if these steps helped.

@LienVR, Thank you for your response.

Yes! Disabling Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and forcing your software to use TWAIN or HP’s own scanning driver can help avoid compatibility issues.

How to Disable WIA and Use TWAIN Instead:

Disable WIA Service

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Scroll down and find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click it and select Properties.
  • Set Startup type to Disabled and click Stop to turn it off.
  • Click Apply > OK, then restart your PC.

Ensure TWAIN is Installed & Used

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Imaging devices (or Printers if listed there).
  • Right-click your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302fdw and choose Update driver.
  • Select Browse my computer for driversLet me pick from a list.
  • Ensure a TWAIN driver is available. If not, reinstall HP software and select TWAIN during installation.

Test Scanning via TWAIN-Compatible Software

  • Instead of using Windows Scan or HP Scan, try scanning via a TWAIN-compatible program like:
    • HP Scan Extended (if available in HP utilities)
    • Adobe Acrobat
    • NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2)

Set Default Scanning Mode in Your Medical Software

  • Open your medical software's settings and look for Scanning Preferences.
  • Select TWAIN as the primary scanning method instead of WIA.

After making these changes, restart your system and test scanning.

Hey @Max3Aj,

I'm not sure if I have a Twain driver installed and I don't get any possiblity to select a TWAIN Driver during the install processes. HP Scan & HP Easy Start are the software tools that are always suggested if I'm searching for drivers/software for my printer.

These are all step through wizards where nothing can be selected / customized.

Each post I've found on HP TWAIN DRIVER sends me to HP support page where it can not be downloaded individually.

These are the 2 entries that are listed in the device manager:

Schermafbeelding 2025-02-23 114019.png

The driver settings for the first one lists:

Schermafbeelding 2025-02-23 114128.png

The other one:

Schermafbeelding 2025-02-23 114155.png

These are the scan sources that I can select in the medical software:

Schermafbeelding 2025-02-23 114505.png

Does Web scan need to be enabled or disabled in EWS?

I'm running on a Windows 11 Home 10.0.26100 Build 26100.

The HP Twain administration app gives me this:

Schermafbeelding 2025-02-23 121644.png

only the highlighted source (bronnen) works, but that only gives me a HP scan like settings page, but I can't scan from this application.

Current situation now: WIA service enabled again, only scanning through WIA scanning source.

If other drivers are availiable please provide me a download path.

Thanks for the support.

Hey @VikramTheGreat,

Here are the results of running the HP Scan & Print Doctor;

The print screens are in Dutch, sorry for that.

Device management issue detected, the only proposed solution: reboot computer...

And yet in device manager Windows does not detect any issues, all drivers are on the latest version:

HP Twain: HP image device not found errorHP Twain: HP image device not found errorHP Scan: it states that HP Scan software can't be found and yet it is installed.HP Scan: it states that HP Scan software can't be found and yet it is installed.

HP SCAN application not found, and yet it is installed: see icon on desktop.

Is there a log file I can upload?

Thanks for the help

Hi @LienVR,

Now completely uninstall the printer driver:

1. In the search box, type and open "Uninstall a Program".
2. Look for HP Printer software.
3. Right-click to uninstall.
4. In the search box, type and open “Devices and printers”.
5. In Devices and Printers, look for your HP printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose “Delete” or “Remove Device.”
6. Open the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7. Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”).
8. Click on the "Drivers" tab.
9. Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it, click on it and click “Remove” at the bottom.
10. Select Ok.
11. Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.
12. Close Devices and Printers Once the software and drivers are removed.
13. Restart the computer.

Then download HP Easy Start from the below link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/HPEasyStart_11_5_4644_17.exe

and run HP Easy Start and have to select Full Software and install the printer

If the issue persists after doing the above step.

Open Control Panel -> Devices and Printers -> Right-click your printer, select Printer Properties, click the Ports tab, and then click Add Port. Select? Standard TCP/IP Port, and then click?New Port.

Follow the instructions to add a new port using the  IP address of the printer, then finish and close the add port window and then click on apply and after a few seconds, try to print and scan

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The link you've provided does not work:

LienVR_0-1741791156316.png

And if the numbers 11_5_4644_17 are the version number of HP Smart, please not the version of HP Smart I had to download is now 16_8_12.

I've done all the steps you've listed. Uninstalled all HP driver software, reinstalled everything from the HP Smart including HP Smart Web, downloaded all the versions that where proposed using the tools provided:

LienVR_1-1741791325054.png

Still If I run HP Smart doctor again the problem remains the same.

An error in device management, WIA scan works (the first time), TWAIN fails, HP Smart scan fails because the software isn't found.

I've added the printer port set to the IP address of the printer I've done it all.

To make things clear, printing works fine, it'scanning that remains the issue. It even hangs while using the HP tools so it isn't the medical software I'm using.

This is starting to look like rocket science here...
