Hi @SOSO93,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP DeskJet 2820e is showing a “scanner defective” message, and parts of your copies are missing. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Restart the printer
– Turn off the printer, unplug it for 30–60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.
– This can reset scanner hardware errors temporarily.
Check the scanner glass and lid
– Ensure the scanner glass is clean, dry, and free of scratches or debris.
– Check the underside of the lid for dust or marks that could block scanning.
Inspect the scanner carriage
– Open the scanner lid and gently move the scanner carriage along its track.
– Make sure it moves smoothly and is not obstructed.
Run a scanner test
– Use the HP Smart app or HP Scan software to scan a simple document.
– This helps determine if the problem is software-related or hardware-related.
Update printer firmware
– Open HP Smart → Printer Settings → Printer Update.
– Updating firmware can fix scanner calibration and detection errors.
Reset the printer to factory defaults
– Go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults.
– Reconnect Wi-Fi or USB and test scanning again.
Check for hardware failure
– If the error persists and scanning parts of the page continue to be missing, the scanner sensor or carriage may be defective.
– In this case, the scanner assembly may need service or replacement.
I hope this helps.
