HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw

Hi,

My Laserjet Pro M148dw was working fine doing printing.  Prior to August 2026, I successfully used the HP Scan app to operate the scanner.  Now (late August 2026), the scanner app reports "Unable to find your printer".  I can ping the printer just fine and the network report on the printer shows no errors.  But it still prints fine.

I've done the uninstall steps multiple times, uninstalling all drivers, restarting my PC and trying to reinstall using the "Full feature" download.  Still no help.  I tried connecting via ethernet cable to my router instead of wifi.  Still the same result.

I also tried a full reset on the printer.  Still the same result after reinstalling.

I then tried installing the "HP App" (replacement for HP Smart).  It found the printer and installed, and I could use the "Scan" feature inside the HP App.  But it is not fully-featured (example it cannot scan 2-sided documents, where the full app will do that by prompting you to reinsert the scanned documents for the other side, then it automatically recollates the images.).

So, after confirming that the printer and scanner work inside the HP app, I tried to install the " Basic_Webpack_x64-63.8.6459-SJ0001_Basicx64_Webpack.exe" (Basic scanner install download).  After the installation, Windows reported an error "This software cannot run on this PC".  Event viewer showed warnings and errors for

"Signature verification failed for metadata package db013583-cbf6-4c9d-90d1-3508a23c464d from metadata store, error 0x800B0100." and

"Signature verification failed for metadata package db013583-cbf6-4c9d-90d1-3508a23c464d from metadata store, error 0x800B0100.",  and

"The Appx operation 'RegisterPackageAsync' on 'WindowsWorkload.TextRecognition.Lnl.1_1.2607.840.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe' failed for user 'S-1-5-21-1969573207-3261599662-3303173074-1001' - error 0x80070005: " and dozens of other error events.

THEN, when I went back to the "HP App", which originally worked OK,  it shows my printer as "Not connected".  It reports "Unable to find your printer".  But again, PRINTING works just find.

I went through the online troubleshooting step and got connected by phone with an agent.  After various steps, he concluded that "something is wrong with your computer that is preventing the installation from working." - like, "Duh".

My Laptop is a new Dell (6 months old), very vanilla, Windows updates up-to-date.  Although I'm now running a wired connection to my laptop, I tried wifi and could not find "Wireless setup wizard" in the printer menu - only "Wifi Protected setup".  I prefer to assign a fixed IP address to the printer, but could not figure a way to be able to select my wifi SSID (I have 2 SSID's - my main router and a mesh router connected to it.)  Again, no changes in the network have occurred for several years.  But I can't connect via wifi now because I can't select my SSID, and the setup from the laptop fails.

I then went to the Microsoft store and downloaded "PDF Document Scanner".  It connects to the scanner works perfectly!  But it doesn't have the features of the HP app, like duplex scanning, and the interface is clunky.  I also tried "Easyscan - PDF Scan", and it worked too.

So this seems to indicate a problem with HP's software.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi @rsaritzky,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for providing such a detailed description. You have already done extensive troubleshooting, and the fact that printing continues to work while the scanner works through the HP app and third-party scanning applications is an important finding.

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw supports scanning through HP LaserJet Software Scan, TWAIN, and WIA-compatible software. HP also confirms that the full Windows solution includes the HP Scan driver and HP Scan application.

The M148dw has a 35-sheet ADF, but HP's specifications state “Duplex ADF scanning: No.” Therefore, the behavior you described, scanning one side, prompting you to turn/reinsert the pages, and then combining the pages, is a software-assisted manual two-sided workflow rather than automatic duplex scanning. HP Scan for Windows does support this type of two-sided document workflow.

I would not recommend performing another printer reset or repeating the same driver installation at this point.

The next useful step is to determine whether Windows is still registering the M148dw's scanner/WIA component correctly after the failed HP software installation.

Please check:

  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw.
  • Check whether Windows shows a Scanner section for the device.
  • If available, open the scanner settings and see whether Windows can initiate a scan.

Also, please let us know whether the HP LaserJet Pro M148dw appears under Device Manager > Imaging devices or Cameras and whether there are any warning icons associated with it.

Since the HP app and other applications have demonstrated that the scanner itself can communicate with the computer, these checks should help distinguish between a Windows scanner/WIA registration issue and the HP Scan application/driver installation issue, without unnecessarily repeating the troubleshooting you have already completed.

You can also use HP's current M148dw Software and Drivers page to verify that you are using the correct M148dw package. HP currently lists the HP LaserJet Pro M148dw Printer Full Software Solution (version 44.11.2775) for this model.

Hi Kuroi - thank you for the reply.

Under "Printers and Scanners", there is a "Scanner" section, and Windows can successfully initiate/complete a scan.  The name "NPI05A318 (HP Laserjet Pro M148dw was chosen by the installation software):

The scanner also appears in Device Manager

You also mentioned "HP currently lists the HP LaserJet Pro M148dw Printer Full Software Solution (version 44.11.2775) for this model. "  When I look up software and drivers, it actually shows version "44.11.2779" in addition to "44.11.2775" - I used the installation pack for 44.11.2779.  I also tried the scanner-only driver pack.

Here is the error message received when trying to use the HP Scan app:

Thanks again for the reply - this has been quite frustrating...

Hi @rsaritzky,

Thank you for checking those settings and for providing the screenshots. That helps narrow this down considerably.

Since Windows can successfully scan from the M148dw and the scanner is correctly present in Device Manager, the scanner hardware and Windows' basic scanner interface are working. The failure is specifically occurring when HP Scan tries to communicate with the printer. HP's current M148dw specifications also confirm that HP Scan is part of the supported Windows software for this model.

I also note that you have already tried both 44.11.2775 and 44.11.2779, as well as the scanner-only package, so I would not have you repeat those installations.

At this point, I'd like to try one targeted check:

Press Windows + R.

Enter: services.msc

Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

Confirm that its status is running and the startup type is automatic.

Also confirm that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and DCOM Server Process Launcher are running.

Restart the computer and test HP Scan again.

HP specifically identifies WIA as the Windows component responsible for communication between Windows and the scanner.

If WIA and the related services are already running correctly, please let me know.

Also, thank you for pointing out the 44.11.2779 package. That is useful information, and I would use the newer package you tested rather than go back to 44.11.2775.

Best regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
