Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

My Samsung laser printer / scanner has always worked perfectly.  It is connected with USB. However the scanner  has stopped working, but I am still able to print even though the system shows Idle.  If I disconnect the USB it shows Offline.  I have tried downloading different drivers, and Scan apps but the Scanner is greyed out and can't be used.  I have reset the USB ports and NVRAM. I have tried with a different USB cable, but nothing helps.

I am now wondering if the upgrade from macos Mojave to Monterey has caused this problem ?

Any ideas please ?

Hi @musicMike2,

I understand your Samsung laser printer/scanner is still printing but the scanner function is greyed out and unusable over USB, even after trying multiple drivers, apps, cables, and resets. Since the issue appeared after upgrading from macOS Mojave to Monterey, it’s likely related to driver or system compatibility. Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot:

Check macOS compatibility
Samsung (now under HP) does not always provide updated drivers for new macOS versions.
Visit the HP/Samsung support site to confirm if your model has a macOS Monterey-compatible driver.

Remove old drivers completely
Open System Preferences → Printers & Scanners and delete the Samsung printer.
Remove any associated Samsung or HP scanner drivers from /Library/Printers and /Library/Application Support.
Restart your Mac to clear old driver remnants.

Install the latest Universal Print Driver (UPD)
Download and install the latest HP Universal Print Driver for macOS Monterey.
This sometimes restores scanner functionality on older Samsung devices that no longer have native support.

Test scanning from different apps
Use Preview → Import from Scanner or Image Capture to see if the scanner is detected.
If third-party apps are greyed out, it indicates the driver is not recognized by macOS.

Reset the printing system
Go to Printers & Scanners, right-click the printer list, and select Reset printing system.
Add the printer again using USB after the reset.

Check System Preferences → Security & Privacy
Ensure macOS is not blocking the driver installation.
Look under General for a message about blocked software and allow it.

Test on another Mac or OS version (if possible)
If available, connect the printer to a Mac running Mojave or Big Sur.
If the scanner works there, it confirms Monterey is causing compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.
