Scanner in Envy 4500 unable to scan since Mac update "Scanner occupied. Wait till vacant" which does not happen. Have latest update of Big Sur and of HP Smart.app after un-install and new installation. Printer and wireless (only when printing) is working perfectly, Copying and scanning is not at all working. Error message when scanning says the scanner is busy and to wait until it is available. Restart, uninstall and new installation changes nothing: no copy, no scan. No error message when trying to copy, just nothing happens. How do I cancel whatever job must be hanging in the scanner??

I understand you are not able to scan. Since you are also not able to make copies, this could be an issue with the scanner hardware in the printer.

Reset the printer

1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.

You may use the Image Capture app to scan and check if that helps as shown in this document. 

Make a copy and check if that works. If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.
