Hi @MRhin,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is making a strange noise while scanning, there are a few potential reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Make sure there are no paper jams in the printer. Even a small piece of paper can cause strange noises. Open the printer and inspect all areas, including the paper path and output tray.

Inspect the Scanner Area:

  • Ensure that there are no foreign objects, such as paper clips or debris, in the scanner area. Sometimes, objects can obstruct the movement of the scanning mechanism.

Check for Loose Parts:

  • Ensure that all parts inside the printer are properly secured. Loose components can cause unusual noises during operation.

Clean the Scanner Glass:

  • Dirty or smudged scanner glass can affect the scanning process and may result in strange noises. Clean the scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Update Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware and drivers installed. Visit the official HP website to download and install the latest updates for your printer model.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. Power it on and see if the issue persists.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a factory reset on the printer. This can often resolve software-related issues that may be causing the noise.

Remember to handle the printer and its components with care while troubleshooting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
