HP LaserJet MFP M29w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been scanning with this MFP every week or two without issue for a couple years now, but suddenly the scanner light isn't getting to full brightness.

It seems to be having trouble with the prescan routine. It will light up dimly like it would for a prescan calibration to check the position of the light bar, but it tries to do the actual scan at this brightness as well. It is sometimes successful, but then if I try to scan again immediately after it will say scan not successful. After a couple minutes, it will let me try again and usually work, but the bulb is still dim.

I tried adjusting the copy brightness from the printer settings but that did not help. I also tried unplugging the MFP and plugging it back in to perform a hard reboot.

Is there some sort of scanner bed calibration or config reset I can try to fix this? With it working occasionally (just with the dim bulb), I don't believe its a hardware fault, but maybe I'm wrong.

Hi @marsenault,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP LaserJet MFP M29w scanner where the scanner light isn't reaching full brightness consistently, affecting its ability to scan properly.

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Power Cycle and Reset: You've already tried unplugging the MFP and performing a hard reboot, which is a good initial step. Make sure to leave it unplugged for at least 1-2 minutes before plugging it back in.

Firmware Update: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve bugs or issues with scanner functionality. Update the firmware on an HP printer

Scanner Calibration: HP printers often have a scanner calibration function that can help resolve scanning issues. Here’s how you can initiate a scanner calibration:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Settings or Setup menu.
  • Look for an option related to Scanner Maintenance, Scanner Calibration, or something similar.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the scanner. This process may involve scanning a calibration sheet or following prompts on the display.

Driver Update: Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your printer on your Windows 10 system. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues with scanner performance.

Check Scanner Glass and Settings: Ensure that the scanner glass is clean and free from any smudges or dirt that could interfere with the scanning process. Also, check the scanner settings in the HP software on your computer to ensure they are correctly configured.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
