Hi @Henderson4,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you've been using your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer/scanner for over a year and suddenly encounter the message "To scan a computer, make sure that the scanning software has been installed and configured on your computer," there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Restart Your Printer and Computer:

  • Turn off your printer and computer.
  • Wait for a minute or two, and then turn them back on.
  • Check if the issue persists after the restart.

Verify Software Installation:

  • Confirm that the scanning software is still installed on your computer.
  • Ensure that the software is up-to-date. If there are updates available, install them.

Check Connection:

  • Make sure that your printer is properly connected to your computer, either through a USB cable or a wireless connection.
  • If using a wireless connection, ensure that both the printer and the computer are on the same network.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can help identify and fix common printing and scanning problems. Download and run this tool to see if it resolves the issue.

Reinstall the Software:

  • Uninstall the existing scanning software from your computer.
  • Download the latest version of the software from the official HP website.
  • Install the software again and check if the problem persists.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that your printer drivers are up-to-date. You can visit the HP website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers for your operating system.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your operating system is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • Check if your firewall or antivirus software is blocking the communication between your computer and the printer. Temporarily disable them to see if it resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
