Scanner not working

HP Recommended
Officejet 6700
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I have spent the past few days trying everything to be able to scan again. My first question is:

1. Is there a live person I can talk to at hp? Please.
2. Let me explain what I have done. Scanner stopped working after updating the software in my Mac. I’ve spent an hour on the phone with apple. Today I finally have my scanner back but it still isn’t scanning. It says, “waiting for scanner.” I have tried everything from all the discussion boards, and articles I’ve read and also what Apple had me do. I reset the printer, deleted, deleted my easy scan, try to download the driver again (it won’t work), restarted the computer and printer several times. I’ve talked to the HP virtual agent several times and am losing my mind!! Please help!

Hi @Amers36,

I'd like to help!

Try updating mac and printer firmware

To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac

Uninstall the printer software -

1. Click Finder in the Dock.

2. In the menu bar, click Go, click Applications, and then open the HP or Hewlett Packard folder.

a) If HP Uninstaller is in the folder, double click it, and then follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.

b) If HP Uninstaller is not in the folder, continue to the next step.

3. Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.

4. In the menu bar, click Go, click Go to Folder, type /Library/Printers, then click Go.

The Printers folder opens.

5. Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.

6. Restart the Mac.

7. Right-click or Ctrl + click the Trash icon, and then select Empty Trash.

Install the printer software -Software and drivers for HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - H711

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have the same problem and have already uninstalled and reinstalled printer software, installed and deleted Easy Scan,  checked firmware, etc., etc. In addition, the printer will not copy nor will it scan to USB inserted in printer. In other words, this is a printer problem, nothing to do with computer.

My question: is this something that can be fixed on the printer? In which case I'd purchase the $15 package and talk to HP agent. But if there's nothing to be done, would be nice if HP would let us know. Hello HP??? Please respond. Don't mind paying to talk to you, but not if you know in advance it's useless.

@Heidinow, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

If you are not able to make a copy, then yes, this is a hardware issue with the printer.

Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken. In this case, please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
